Clinical Pharmacy
Clinical Pharmacy is a health specialty, which
describes the activities and services of the
clinical pharmacist to develop and promote the
rational and appropriate use of medicinal
products and devices. Whereas in Pharmacy, the
focus of attention is mainly put on synthesis,
chemistry and preparation of drugs, in Clinical
Pharmacy the focus of attention moves from the
drug to the patient/population. Its goals are -
Maximising clinical effect for each patient -
Minimising treatment-induced adverse events -
Minimising expenditures Clinical Pharmacy is
practised in every step from the drug to the
patient before, during and after prescription.
It is done in community pharmacies, hospital
pharmacies, nursing homes, any other setting
where medicines are prescribed and used. The
EPSA Education Working Committee has carried out
an online survey on Clinical Pharmacy. 272
students from 27 countries replied. The Results
of the Survey and the Education Workshop were
combined and resulted in a Statement of Opinion
that was approved by the EPSA General
Assembly According to EPSA, Clinical Pharmacy
provides an added value to the field of pharmacy.
EPSA strongly believes Clinical Pharmacy is very
important for the good practice, development and
future of pharmacy. EPSA thinks not enough
attention is paid to Clinical Pharmacy in the
curricula. To achieve a satisfactory level of
education in Clinical Pharmacy, - it should be
integrated throughout the whole curriculum- in
cooperation with medical students- Clinical
Pharmacy awareness amongst the students should be
increased
