Title: By Miss Buttle and Miss Parkhurst

1
Which period had the most impact on Brighton?
  • By Miss Buttle and Miss Parkhurst
  • Blatchington Mill School

2
Victorian or Regency?
OR
3
The Regency period
  • 1811-1820

4
They gave us the Brighton Pavilion..
  • In 1787 Prince George employed architect Henry
Holland to convert his rented farmhouse into the
    Marine Pavilion.
  • His main reason for this was to see his mistress,
Maria Fitzherbert whom he married in secret.
  • Later, when the prince had become regent, he
asked John Nash to convert it into the Royal
    Pavilion it is today

5
The Theatre Royal
  • The Theatre Royal was built in 1807 for Mr Hewitt
for around 12,000 on New Road.
  • It is a Grade II listed building with many
    travelling and West End shows.

6
The Old Steine
  • Originally used by fishermen to dry their nets,
The Old Steine became a place for upper class
ladies and gentlemen to parade in all their
    finery.
  • There was once a river running through the Old
Steine but George IV paid a large sum of money to
    have it flowing elsewhere.

7
The Victorians
  • 1837-1901

8
They gave us Brighton railway
  • Opened on the 21st September 1841, the railway
was a huge success. Cheap, fast travel meant that
day trippers could come down from London,
providing Brighton with a lot more revenue. In
the early 1880s, a glass roof was added to keep
    the travellers dry.

9
The aquarium
  • Designed by Eugenius Birch, designer of the West
Pier. With the biggest display tank in the world
(over 110,000 gallons of water), the Aquarium
attracted many royal visitors to inspect and
    enjoy the exotic creatures.

10
The West Pier
  • The West Pier began to be built in 1863, taking
three years to complete. It was first called the
New Pier. It quickly became a fashionable place
to be seen. It was so successful the owners
extended the pier in 1893 which was later
    converted into a theatre.

11
And The Volks electric Railway
  • Magnus Volk built the railway in 1883. It was the
first electric railway in Britain and the oldest
remaining railway in the world. It has now been
extended to Black Rock in the Marina.

12
We think it was
  • The Victorians because they built a lot more
buildings and provided more jobs than the
    Georgians did.

Thank you for watching!
  • Enjoy your stay in Brighton!
