- NCWISE Analysis
- LEA Network Architecture and Capacity Standards
11What is evaluated in LEANetwork Readiness?
LEA Technology Infrastructure - Network
- Architecture assessment
- Ensures that LEA network has adequate
connectivity - Verifies that LEA Network is testable
- Monitoring capabilities assessment
- Verifies that LEA has ability to monitor network
utilization within its network - Identifies how much of the network is being used
and how usage patterns change over time - Network capacity testing assessment
- Verifies that network performance can be measured
by determining available bandwidth, latency and
packet loss
12Architecture Recommendations
LEA Technology Infrastructure - Network
- Connectivity should utilize TCP/IP
- Access should come through any LEA/school
firewalls and proxy servers - Bandwidth that is made available across WAN for
each concurrent user should be - 6 kbps per concurrent OIAS user
- Application performance and connectivity is
directly dependent on network latency and
available bandwidth
13Network Bandwidth
LEA Technology Infrastructure - Network
- How is network bandwidth utilized?
14LEA Technology Infrastructure - Network
What is the formula for computing network
bandwidth?
- 6 kbps x 1.5 (safety factor) x concurrent users
NC WISE bandwidth requirement - At (as discovered by network monitoring)
- Example LEA anticipates 20 concurrent users at
school that has a 256 kbps connection with 50
utilization and 70ms latency - 6 x 1.5 x 20 180 kbps
- This means that LEA does not have enough
bandwidth to run the NC WISE application because
it does not have enough AVAILABLE bandwidth - Additional systems beyond NC WISE need to be
factored into the bandwidth equation
15What information will network monitoring
provide?
LEA Technology Infrastructure - Network
- Provides information for assessing readiness of
an LEA - Provides health and capacity information on all
LEA networks to aid in troubleshooting statewide
application problems - Provides information on the impact of NCWISE on
LEA networks - Provides information to aid in design and
deployment of future network - LEA is responsible for administering,
developing, maintaining and troubleshooting its
own network.
16What are the responsibilities of an LEA in this
area?
LEA Technology Infrastructure - Network
- Provide connectivity to NC WISE sites
- Assess current network readiness, including
available bandwidth from ISP - Ensure that all WISE user desktops meet minimum
specs - Ensure that all software is maintained at the
supported release - Operating Systems
- Browsers
- Virus Protection
- Acrobat Reader
- Assess LEAs ability to diagnose, coordinate, and
resolve client support problems
