WSDOT ATIS Project

• Planning started in 1997
• Funded by WSDOT
• Scope refined in 2000 Now part of larger
  project.
• ATIS, traffic information cameras, advisory
  radio.
• Delays encountered negotiating use of existing
  license-plate readers for queue-length
  estimation.
• Current Status Signs installed, BC installing
  loops for sections of northbound approach in
  Canada.

• Funded by US FHWA Border Program, BC MoT,
  Transport Canada FY 2001
• Project delivery integrated with WSDOT project
  via IMTC.
• Decision to use loop-detectors for queue
  detection.
• BC managing entire loop installation project
  (with Canadian and US contractors)

• Loop detectors at inspection booth.
• Sense presence of car operation of booth.
• Estimate service rate.
• Loop detectors placed at intervals in approach
  lanes.
• Detect low-resolution queue length (by road
  segment between loops)
• Loops beyond queue-end detect arrival rate.
• Interpolate estimated queue length.
• Wait-time (queue length) x (avg. service time.)
