benefits to poor people

• 3. Integrated approach necessary to improve
  livestock production systems for the poor-
• Not only improving animal genetics and
  breeding but also health, nutrition, market
  access, credit, etc to bring livestock
  production systems to a new level of efficiency
  for poor livestock keepers
• Biggest impact of breeding will be in intensive
  than agro pastoral systems (where other
  interventions more important for poor people)

• Keep watching brief on new discoveries and
  technologies that offer much promise, and their
  progress in applications in industrial systems
  initially
• Capacity to innovate in developing countries is
  critical ability to innovate, assess and use
  the best of science worldwide international
  community can help here

• FAO Global plan of action for animal genetic
  resources and especially capacity building and
  research needs in developing countries provide a
  powerful framework for action where the global
  scientific community can make important
  contributions

• Need identify priorities for future RD and other
  investments

• Balance conservation AnGR with livestock system
  improvement for poor people

• What do people need to know, and how can they
  find it?
• Better synthesis and sharing of information

• Link information of production systems with
  market demand (e.g. how consumer demands
  translate into genetic traits )

• Breeding ( Eds definitition of it) for short to
  medium term poverty alleviation will have a
  significant impact where
• Production systems are changing
• Ecosystem production potential is not too
  constraining
• Management of the system can be improved
• Market demand creates incentives for
  intensification
• Institutional arrangements enable the provision
  of breeding services within a holistic approach
  to service delivery along the value chain

• Opening lecture by Achim Steiner of UNEP will be
  published by ILRI in the Peter Doherty lecture
  series
• Several journalists here this week, filing
  stories on animal breeding for poverty
  alleviation awareness raising worldwide
• ILRI will seek to engage interested participants
  in dialogue on specific issues via e-mail, web
  and other communication means
