2
Learning...
  • You learn to work together to perform the
    experiment..
  • You learn to be individual in writing up the
    report..
  • You learn to work as a group in calculating
results and discussing when writing up the group
    report...

3
Experiments
  • You will perform all experiments in a group.
  • Make sure that the demonstrator puts initials and
date on your results. Hand in a photocopy with
    your write-up.

4
What you need to prepare
  • 1. Download the Lab Guide and Lab Manual from the
    web page, under "Courses".
  • http//personal.cityu.edu.hk/bhtan/
  • 2. Read the Lab Manual Guide.
  • 3. Check the Rota to see what experiment you are
    doing.
  • 4. Read and prepare the experiment.
  • 5. Come on time for the lab session.
  • 6. Make sure you bring a calculator, etc.

5
Times......
  • Be aware of the lab dates...
  • Look at the rota...

6
But I dont know about this.....
  • Some experiments may be completely unfamiliar...
  • not yet covered in lectures....
  • because the expts are on a rota system.
  • So it is up to you to learn, revise, ask and be
    prepared for the experiment
  • Dont complain that
  • nobody taught me that before

7
In the lab......
  • Safety Read the Lab Manual Guide (pages 5,6).
  • Do not rush around the laboratory, take your time
and do not bump into people.
  • Wear your lab coat at all times. Wear the safety
    glasses provided.
  • Do not eat or drink.
  • Do not put waste organic solvents, or solids,
    into the sink.

8
In the lab.....
  • Wash up before you leave the laboratory.
  • If you use acid, pour it out in the fume cupboard
    - not on the open bench.
  • Wear gloves.
  • Keep the fume cupboard front glass pulled well
    down.
  • If you are uncertain about anything, ASK, do not
just go ahead and make a mistake.

9
Staff
  • P.T. (present only for 1 hour). Expt. 8a
  • Technicians
  • Ms Yeung Wai Fun (Connie) Expt. 6
  • Mr Chan Ho Hang Expts 4, 8b, 9

10
In the Lab General Procedure
  • Do not pipette directly from bottles because you
may contaminate the solutions. First, pour a
    little into a beaker.
  • Use a pipette sucker, not your mouth.
  • Keep bottles and glassware away from the edge of
    the bench.
  • Remember to remove the funnel after filling up
    the burette.

11
In the lab...
  • After registering
  • 1. You have a 10-15 minute pre-lab test for
    Expts. 2, 3, 5,11.
  • (do not come late and miss it!!)
  • 2. Start Expts 4, 9 immediately with H.H.Chan
  • 3. Expt. 6 Wait for Connie to take you to GC
    room.
  • 4. Expt. 8 PT will start immediately after
    registration.
  • 5. Mr Lau will help you to prepare solutions for
Expt 5 in the lab before you go to the IR room.
