Guernica- Facts
  • The town of Guernica is situated 30 kilometers
    east of Bilbao, in Spain.
  • On 26th April 1937, Guernica was bombed by the
German Condor Legion. As it was a market day the
    town was crowded.
  • The town was first struck by explosive bombs and
then by incendiaries. As people fled from their
homes they were machine-gunned by fighter planes.
  • The three hour raid completely destroyed the
town. It is estimated that 1,685 people were
killed and 900 injured in the attack out of a
    population of 7000.
  • What effect did the development of bombers and
the casualties at Guernica have on the British
    Government?
