Requirements for FRD-41
  • Retain in Log book for 60 days, then maintain in
    Station Files for 3 years
  • Record Date of Each Inspection
  • Inspectors Full Signature and name. No Initials
    are permitted
  • First of month, end of month mileage

Keys to Success
  • Have a plan for daily, weekly checks
  • Keep the plan simple but thorough
  • Execute the plan with precision
  • Execute it the same way every time
  • Combine Weekly check with Daily check
  • Get an assistant!

Why do we do it?
  • PM identifies small problems before they get
    large, which reduces repair costs
  • PM provides for safety for all who ride the
    apparatus, as well as other vehicles on the road
  • PM provides for optimum performance of the
    apparatus, so that it works when we need it
  • PM allows us to excel in our service delivery,
    and places us in a consistent position to make a
    difference in the lives of the citizens we serve

How do we do it?
  • Start with FRD-162
  • Work from outside-in, bottom-up
  • Start with a cool vehicle, if possible
  • Start with a dry vehicle, if possible
  • Suggestion rubber gloves
  • Suggestion coveralls
  • Suggestion eye protection

Tires
  • Check tread wear evenness, punctures, cuts
  • Tire pressure check, all tires
  • If in doubt, tire pressures are marked on tires
  • No Recaps per EMTA

Tread Thickness
  • DOT minimum tread thickness front- 4/32
  • DOT minimum tread thickness rear-2/32
  • Look for nails, objects stuck in tires

Wheels/ Lug Nuts
  • Check for cracks in wheels
  • Check for rust around lug nuts
  • Check for lug nut tightness / marks
  • Left side wheels are reverse threaded
  • Check Hub nuts also
  • Check hubs for oil / grease leaks

Underbody Checkget out the creeper
  • Start at front, work to rear
  • Check play in steering wheel with partner
  • No more than 2 movement in steering wheel
    without tire movement
  • Check Steering shafts for lubrication, slop
  • Check Steering box for damage

Exhaust Pipe / Muffler
  • Check for exhaust leaks
  • Check for dents, damage, holes

Under Engine
  • Check for Fluid Leaks
  • Check Engine Mounts
  • Check PTO , if Equipped on Transmission
  • Check for frame cracks
  • Check for any rubbing, chafing, or pinching

Brakes
  • Check rotors for cracks, warpage
  • Pads with oil, grease or brake fluid on them
  • Cracked, worn or frayed air hoses
  • Cracks or dents in the air chambers
  • Broken or loose slack adjusters

More Brakes
  • Chock wheels both sides
  • Have partner release parking brake
  • Visually inspect push rod travel, max. 2
  • If stuck, or slow, notify EMTA
  • Pump Pedal until low pressure alarm sounds, 60
    psi. Continue pumping until parking brake knob
    pops out.

  • Bleed Air tanks, even automatic bleeders, until
    moisture stops

  • Air lines for chafing, breaks

  • Check Bumper Accessories for Clearance
  • Rotate Front Suction Pipe Forward

Tilt Cab Checks Cont.
  • Secure SCBAs In Cab
  • Secure EMS Compt., books, portable radios, etc.
  • Remove turnout gear
  • Proceed to tilting cab

Tilting Cab
  • Apparatus battery on, ignition off
  • Insure adequate overhead clearance
  • Insure petcock is closed, if eqipped
  • Lift Cab using switch until safety bar falls into
    place, do not stop it part of the way
  • Do not lower cab back onto safety bar, it causes
    lift cylinder seals to fail
  • Handle is for manual override, ratchet lift

Properly Tilted Cab
  • No Damage!
  • Everything Clears
  • Access to motor, transmission, front axle,
    suspensions, cooling systems and front of pump
    house is provided

Checks with Cab Up
  • Drive Belts-clean, max 2 play
  • No frays
  • In place
  • Radiator/Fluid Level
  • If hot, use sight glass
  • Cooling system hoses
  • Any coolant leaks

Engine Checks
  • Any leaks (especially around filters or gaskets)
  • Loose Components
  • Electrical wiring harnesses
  • Motor Oil, ATF, Power steering fluid checks

  • Front Brakes
  • Front Springs Shocks

  • Frame for cracks

Batteries
  • Most batteries now used are no-maintenance, or
    sealed
  • No hydrometer readings to take
  • May be load tested as banks, not individually
  • Clean with battery cleaner and wire brush, rinse
    with water, EYE PROTECTION
  • Ensure clamps are tight
  • Protect with battery terminal protector
  • Older batteries check water level

Fire Pump
  • Use all access openings
  • Operate all valves drains
  • Insure all control linkage is operating properly,
    valves are closing fully

  • Lube all Valves
  • Lube Relief Valve
  • Check Primer and priming oil
  • Operate, lube all drains

  • Return cab to lower position
  • Gauges
  • All running lights, headlights, fog lights, turn

  • Alternator belt critical
  • Report problems to supervisor EMTA
