Title: Photography Tips

Photography Tips
  • How to compose quality photos

2
1. The Rule of Thirds
A picture can be divided up into thirds.
The important elements should be placed where
these lines intersect (circled).

You can also arrange areas into bands occupying a
third or place things along an imaginary line.

2. Warm Up Those Tones
  • Outdoor portraits and sunny landscapes

Change your white balance setting from auto to
cloudy.
9
2. Warm Up Those Tones
  • Add punch to your images
  • with a polarizing filter
  • Use a pair of quality sunglasses,
  • then simply take them off and
  • use them as your polarizing filter.

10
The left picture was shot normally without any
filtration. The right picture was shot with a
polarizing filter. Notice the enhanced colors and
deeper sky tones. (Nikon D70s, Program mode)
11
3. Outdoor Portraits That Shine
  • Use the fill flash or flash on mode.

Position the subject so the sun illuminates
the hair from the side or the back.
Put the subject in the shade under a tree,
then use the flash to illuminate the subject.
12
The camera picks up all of the light in the
background so the flash does not automatically
fire. By manually selection the fill flash or
changing angles, the flash fills in the dark
foreground. (Nikon d70S, auto, flash on)
13
4. Macro Mode Madness
  • Look for the close up or macro mode icon,
(which is usually a flower symbol)

Hold the shutter button down halfway to allow the
camera to focus. (flash off)
When the confirmation light or sound signals,
press the shutter down the rest of the way to
record the image.

Nature looks much different, and sometimes more
compelling, at close range. (Nykon D70s, auto,
macro, flash off)

5. Horizon Line Mayhem
  • Be aware that it's important to capture your
    images as level as possible.

Take your best shot at a straight picture,
reposition the camera slightly and take a few
more pictures with slight adjustments.
Practice level framing of your shots
19
Look for nature's horizontal lines and use them
as guides. You can use the line where the sky
meets the horizon as your level.

10. Slow Motion Water
This was shot in Auto mode but
31
You can create motion in a still with moving
water by mounting your camera on a tripod and
slowing the shutter.
32
Watch for moments
There are times when things happen so quickly,
there isnt time to tweak any settings.
Let the auto mode take over so you can
concentrate on the composition.
