Brass Qualifications

• Sound is made by buzzing on a brass mouthpiece
• Instruments are made of brass
• Remember some instruments are made of brass but
  use a different mouthpiece.

Remember these are only the most common examples
from the brass family. You will learn about many
other instruments from the brass and other
families.

Woodwind Qualifications

• Sound is made by blowing on a mouthpiece
  containing a reed
• exception the flute group
• Instruments may be made of wood, brass or metal

String Qualifications

• Sound is made by vibrating a string with a bow or
  your finger
• Instruments are made of wood and (usually) metal
  strings

• Sound is made by plucking, hitting, shaking,
  scraping, blowing, etc
• Instruments are made of plastic, wood, animal
  skins, etc
• Piano belongs here because the sound is made by
  hammers hitting the strings
