  • Patents give the inventor the right to exclude
    others from using, making or selling the
    invention
  • In order to mitigate non-compliance risks while
    obtaining your patent, it is highly desirable for
    an inventor to attain a filing date prior to
    sharing details of the invention with the general
    public

  • Patents are intangible assets of corporations,
    which is particularly important to the startup
    companies, or companies undergoing mergers and
    acquisitions
  • For individuals, patents are important to prevent
    bigger players from exploiting their inventions

Patent Types
  • Depending on your needs, you may seek protection
    in a certain jurisdictions
  • Such that if the protection is sought in Canada
    only, you may file a single application with the
    Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO)
  • Should you desire to be protected in the US, an
    additional copy should be filed with the United
    States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)
