2GET YOUR ENERGY FROM A BUSHEL, NOT A
BARREL. Expanded use for Soybean crops in
America
- 1 bushel (60 LBS.) of soybeans creates 1.4
gallons of pure biodiesel (B100)
3Soy Biodiesel Derived from virgin soybean oil.
Biodiesel - Fuel or fuel component made from
yellow grease, recycled cooking oil, animal fats,
canola seed, sunflower seed, and a variety of
other vegetable oils.
Terminology
4Soybean oil is converted to a methyl ester by
removing glycerin, fatty acids and soap stock
from the oil these by-products will plug fuel
filters and possibly harm diesel engines.Methyl
ester mixes well with petroleum diesel

5Definition of Biodiesel
- Chemically
- Mono Alkyl Ester
- Functionally
- Alternative fuel for
- Petroleum Diesel
- Nomenclature
- B100 100 pure Biodiesel
- B20 20 Biodiesel / 80 petroleum diesel
- B5 5 Biodiesel / 95 petroleum diesel
- B2 2 Biodiesel / 98 petroleum diesel
- Meets ASTM D6751
- Standards
- and
- is produced by a
- BQ 9000 Facility.
6Key Physical PropertiesB100
- Contains less than 15 ppm sulfur
- No aromatics, reduced emissions
- High Cetane (50 )
- High lubricity
- Biodegradable
- Non-toxic
- High flash point, (over 260 F)
- Comparable BTU value to Diesel
7BIODIESEL Blends
- 5 (B5) is a blend of 5 biodiesel
- with 95 petroleum diesel.
- 20 (B20) is a blend of 20 biodiesel
- with 20 petroleum diesel.
- While other blends are also acceptable, 2
Blend (B2) is a very economical way to optimize
lubricity - that was lost with the new ultra low
- diesel fuel in todays marketplace.
8Solvency Impact of Biodiesel
- Biodiesel will clean sediments and accumulated
deposits existing in fuel storage tanks, fuel
lines, fuel pumps and on all fuel system
surfaces. - Once sediments are cleaned from the fuel
injection system, system will perform more
efficiently, increase power, and reduce fuel
consumption. - 20 Biodiesel Blend - filter changes happen in
- 2 of cases when first starting up.
- 5 Biodiesel Blend no changes realized in filter
plugging. Recommend starting at 5 Blend.
9Materials Compatibility
- B100 may adversely affect some elastomers such as
natural or nitrile rubbers over time - Most elastomers used after 1993 are compatible
with B100 (Viton/Teflon) - Blends of B20 - Effect is less,
- Blends of B5 or less - NON EXISTENT
- Normal monitoring of hoses and gaskets for leaks
is sufficient with B20 or less.
10COLD Weather Handling
Handle B2 / B5 / B20 identical to Ultra Low
Sulfur Diesel Fuel No. 2 during the winter
- Blend with Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel Fuel 1
- Add Anti-Gel / Anti-Deicier Additive to
lower diesel fuel pour point. - 50 Biodiesel and 50 ULSD 1
will result in a CFPP of 5 Degrees F.
11Splash Blending
- Biodiesel is slightly heavier than petroleum
diesel with a specific gravity value of 0.88
versus 0.85 for petroleum diesel. - When possible Biodiesel should be splash blended
on top of petroleum diesel - Blends will not separate in cold weather EXCEPT
in EXTREME temperature difference. Once mixed,
stays mixed.
12Why use Biodiesel?
1.) Reduce Dependence on Foreign
Oil 2.) Reduce Emissions 3.) Increase Lubricity
in the Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel Fuel 4.)
Extend Equipment Life 5.) Expanded use for
American made product Soybeans!
13Exceptional Lubricity
2 of Biodiesel will replace all the lubricity in
the fuel that was lost when the Ultra Low Sulfur
Diesel Fuel was required as the STANDARD ON-ROAD
FUEL. Get lubrication without giving up
horsepower, torque or mileage.
14Exceptional Lubricity
- Fuel provides the ONLY source of lubrication for
- Fuel Rotary Pumps
- Distributor fuel injection Pumps
- Fuel Partially lubricates
- Unit injectors
- Injectors
- Unit pumps
- In-line pumps
15Exceptional Lubricity
- Biodiesel Lubricity
- At 2 (B2) lubricity levels is 66 higher than
Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel No. 2 fuel. - Is especially key in the winter. Ultra Low
Sulfur 1 diesel fuel is very DRY (Less lubricity
than ULSD 2).
16Biodiesel Advantages- Recap
- Reduces emissions
- Reduce Dependence on Foreign Oil
- Replace Lubricity lost in the ULSD Fuel
- Completely miscible with petroleum diesel
- Compatible with the compression ignition platform
of todays diesel engines. - Adaptable to existing petroleum infrastructure
17- Since 3rd Annual Green Vehicles Workshop
- Positives
- City of Milw. DPW using Biodiesel since August
2006 without any issues / problems. - Biodiesel Manufacturing Plant being built in
Wisconsin - Pulp Manufacturing Facility - Forklift Trucks
operating in enclosed warehouse has reduced
emissions that employees breathe and reduced
product contamination from diesel fuel particles. - Increased awareness by general population.
- Negatives
- Availability of Biodiesel at a Fuel Station in
S.E. Wisconsin /
Metro Area for end users. - Price of base (raw product) soybean oil.
- NO State of Wisconsin incentives to expand market
