SOUNDS LIKE
  • Alliteration
  • Repetition of similar CONSONANT sounds
  • e.g.. Students study very shortly on Sundays.
  • Assonance
  • Repetition of similar VOWEL sounds
  • e.g.. The long song dragged on.
  • Onomatopoeia
  • A word whose sound imitates its meaning.
  • e.g.. WHOOSH!!! The wind blew by suddenly
  • Refrain
  • Repeated word, phrase, line, or group of lines
  • e.g.. He was like, ya, like totally, like,
    awesome! (bad example)

FIGURE OF SPEECH
  • One thing is described in terms of another, not
    meant to be taken literally
  • Also called figurative language
  • All terms in the next two slides are different
    kinds of figurative language

METAPHORS
  • A comparison of two unlike things without using
    like or as
  • Implied does not directly tell that one thing is
    something else
  • Extended a metaphor that is developed over many
    lines
  • Dead an overused metaphor
  • Mixed inconsistent mixture of two metaphors

  • A comparison btw 2 unlike things using like or
    as
  • eg. You can make this one up, its as easy as pie
  • Personification
  • A metaphor talking about a nonhuman thing as
    human
  • eg. The skies cry their tears over the earth.
  • Hyperbole
  • An exaggeration to express strong emotion or
    comedy
  • eg. Im so hungry I could eat a whole elephant

  • Language that appeals to the senses
  • E.g.. The warm suns rays soothe the weary souls
    who have traveled from the bitter cold, raging
    blizzards to CALIFORNIA!!
