- Based on the way most of us were taught to read,
- You might say SOUND IT OUT
- But.you must say MORE than Sound it Out when
your child needs help reading a word

- While phonics is an important part of reading,
READING FOR MEANING is the primary goal. - If we want to produce independent readers who
monitor and correct themselves as they read, we
must say MORE than SOUND IT OUT

Uses his eyes or finger to make it match

- That makes sense but your child has not learned
that he must use his finger to make it match. He
read 8 words and the sentence has only 6 words.

- Never, never, never cover up the picture
- All beginning readers rely on picture clues and
should be praised for using the pictures as a
strategy for figuring out an unknown word.
