Title: Scientific Grid Projects

1
Scientific Grid Projects
  • David Colling,
  • Lecturer (e-Science)
  • High Energy Physics

2
Why is physics interested in Grids and who else
benefits
  • The LHC starts this year...
  • The worlds largest terrestrial scientific
    endeavour ever undertaken
  • Thousands of Physicists and Engineers, costing
billions (of Swiss Francs) to build. Two general
    purpose experiments and two specialised
experiments. Two of the four leaders from
    Imperial.
  • Will produce tens of PB a year of data and need
similar amounts of Monte Carlo simulated data.
  • Particle physicists need large, distributed
computing and so have become important members of
the overlapping landscape of Grid projects
    (centred around EGEE)
  • EGEE is tasked with providing an e-Science
infrastructure for many different areas of
Science not just particle physics, however the
deadline of the LHC has forced EGEE to produce a
reliable infrastructure on a short timescale.
  • Large role of particle physics (and biomedical
applications) mean that support for throughput
jobs is more highly developed than for parallel
    jobs although this is improving.
  • Within Imperial College, Grid activities have
been (largely) a collaboration between LeSC and
    the High Energy Physics Group

EGEE Enabling Grids for E-sciencE
EGEE is the Worlds largest Grid project Over
300 sites at over 240 institutes, 41,000 CPUs,
5PB of online disk, 20PB Tape Storage
Within the UK
  • EGEE activity mainly funded through GridPP
  • Equipment funded through a variety of sources
  • Support and Management structure with one Tier 1
    and 4 regional Tier 2s.

LondonGrid
  • LondonGrid (aka London Tier 2) consists of nine
sites at five institutions Brunel, Imperial
College, QMUL, RHUL UCL with Imperial as the
    lead partner

Imperials Role
  • Leads the LondonGrid activity
  • Manager and Technical Coordinator of LondonGrid
  • Collaboration/Management Boards of EGEE, GridPP,
    GRIDCC and wLCG
  • First EGEE site to also be members of the NGS
  • Working with smaller communities within the UK
to enable them to use Grid resources.
  • As well as resource delivery and support
    Imperial also
  • - Works on performance analysis of the system and
    individual components.
  • Provides support for SGE within EGEE
  • Delivers the Real Time Monitor (RTM) and other
    dissemination tools
  • Carries out RD into new middleware components
    with new functionality
  • Contributes to the development of MPI support
    within EGEE

6
Conclusions
  • Imperial College leads Grid computing activities
    within London.
  • Imperial College is an active partner in
    National and International Grid projects
  • These Grids will continue to enable an
increasing number of areas of Scientific
    endeavour.
