13Firewalls Security
14What is a Firewall?
- A firewall is simply a program or hardware
device that filters the information coming
through the Internet connection into your private
network or computer system. If an incoming packet
of information is flagged by the filters, it is
not allowed through.
Where does the term come from?
- Computer security borrows this term from
firefighting, where it originated. In
firefighting, a firewall is a barrier established
to prevent the spread of fire.
15Who uses a firewall?
An enterprise with an intranet that allows its
workers access to the wider Internet installs a
firewall to prevent outsiders from accessing its
own private data resources and for controlling
what outside resources its own users have access
to.
16How does a firewall work?
- Packet Filtering - Packets (small chunks of
data) are analyzed against a set of filters.
Packets that make it through the filters are sent
to the requesting system and all others are
discarded.
- Proxy Server - A firewall also works with a
proxy server that makes network requests on
behalf of workstation users and then sends them
the information.
17How does a firewall work? (Continued)
- Stateful inspection - A newer method that
doesn't examine the contents of each packet but
instead compares certain key parts of the packet
to a database of trusted information. Information
traveling from inside the firewall to the outside
is monitored for specific defining
characteristics, then incoming information is
compared to these characteristics. If the
comparison yields a reasonable match, the
information is allowed through. Otherwise it is
discarded.
18Firewalls are separate
- A firewall is often installed in a specially
designated computer separate from the rest of the
network so that no incoming request can get
directly at private network resources.
19Sample Firewall
20Filtering Methods for Wiraless
There are also firewall filtering methods
for wireless communications. For example,
if you are a mobile user, firewalls allow remote
access in to the private network by the use of
secure logon procedures and authentication
certificates.
21What else you need to know?
- IP Numbers
- Domain Names
- Protocols
- Ports
22Products
A number of companies make firewall
products. Features include logging and reporting,
automatic alarms at given thresholds of attack,
and a graphical user interface for controlling
the firewall.

25DNS Domain Name System
- What is DNS? Translates InternetDomain names
into IP numbers. - e.g. www.Syntek.ws 64.119.173.201
- Install DNS Server
- Go to - Add or Remove Programs and then on Add or
Remove Windows Components. Then click on
Components list, then click on Networking
Services and then click Details, select the
Domain Name System (DNS) check box, and then
click OK.

27DNS Cont.
- Configure DNS Server
- Start DNS Server Configuration Wizard.
- Select Add a forward lookup zone. Click Next. The
new forward lookup zone must be a primary zone so
that it can accept dynamic updates. Click
Primary, and then click Next.
28DNS Cont.
Type the name of the zone, and then click Next.
Accept the default name for the new zone file.
Click Next.
29DNS Cont.
Type the name of the zone, and then click Next.
The zone name should match the Network ID of your
local subnet. For example, if your subnet range
is from 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.254, type
192.168.0 in the name value.
- Choose to add a reverse lookup zone now.
Click Next. - Click Primary, and then click Next.
30DNS Cont.
Click Finish to complete the Server Configuration
Wizard.
Accept the default name for the new zone file.
Click Next.
31DNS Cont.
- Enable Dynamic Update on the Forward and Reverse
Lookup Zones (Optional - Recommended) - Enable DNS Forwarding for Internet connections
- If external internet names need to be resolved
you can configure a forwarder so that the
requests are sent to the DNS server of the ISP or
an external DNS server.

37Overview of ISP.
- Internet Service Provider What to look for?
- 1st - What your server will be hosting?
- 2nd - Compare the upload/download stream speeds.
- Recommend Upload stream faster than download
stream. - For Example
- SBC Yahoo 384Kbps - 1.5Mbps/128Kbps - 384Kbps
- Charter 256Kbps/3Mbps
- ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line)
- Lite 64k/256k (20/mo) to Premium 512k/512k
(140/mo) - SDSL (Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line)
Provides same high-quality performance - Basic - 144 Kbps ( 150/mo) to Pro - 2.3 Mbps
(700/mo)
