New Dual Head Boot Machine
  • Programmable Logic Controls (PLC) enables
    flexible program changes.
  • Basic changeovers are performed by operators
(average change over time one minute).
  • Cost of machine if built by machine builder
    approximately 35K.
  • Built by Prestolite Tifton Team. Cost
    approximately 200 labor hours parts.
  • Built from spare parts. Utilizes ergo table from
    previous project.
  • All pneumatic controls.
  • Changeover requires maintenance adjustment 5-45
    minutes depending upon the product.

Old Manual Style Boot Machine
Maintenance needed to adjust external timers for
dovetail finger grippers.
Maintenance needed to adjust terminal location
Maintenance needed to enable/disable grease.
Once boot is placed on collar, foot pedal is
required to activate machine. Dependent on
operator placing boot fully for consistent
gauging.
Maintenance needed to adjust finger gripper
assembly.
Maintenance needed to adjust dovetail tooling
assembly.
Maintenance needed to adjust boot straightening
rod.

Old Manual Style Boot Machine
All exhausted air is released into the
environment.
Pneumatic controls complicated to troubleshoot
requires physical plumbing changes to modify
function of machine. Example To add glue
requires re-plumbing pneumatic system -
approximately 24 hours plus materials.
6
New Dual Head Boot Machine
Regulator adjustment for air bearing accessible
to operator.
Pressure sensor activates machine when boot is
placed on collar. This ensures boot is fully
seated for consistent gauging and does not
require foot pedal.
ControlsOperator selects left or right side,
straight or bent boot . Machine runs what is
needed for selected operation.
Table Adjuster Ergo table for sitting or
standing.
No finger/gripper adjustments.
Uses electric optic touch hand switch for both
sides. No force required to activate.
Dovetails enabled or disabled through selector
switch
Four Insulator Bins 1. No insulator
changeover. 2. Working on carousel bin that would
house up to 10 part numbers with in and out
capability.
7
New Dual Head Boot Machine
Adjustable gauging for both sides.
Using one Thompson slide to run both sides.
Front of machine
8
New Dual Head Boot Machine
24 volt DC power supply
Noise baffle chamber. All exhausted air is
contained in baffle chamber.
Exhaust muffler.
Back of machine.
Main disconnect for lockout.
Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) is easier for
troubleshooting and enables changes to function
of machine by use of computer. Example To add
glue requires program change - apprx. 30 min.
Grease pumps.
