HOPE THROUGH EDUCATION With more education
and awareness more preventative measures,
diligent actions and more recoveries to save a g
eneration of children

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • Why is he/she autistic?
  • Can autistics recover?
  • When does the DAN approach work?
  • Why is autism a biomedical problem?
  • Why is it so difficult to reverse?
  • How do you do it?

But first, a bit of history

DAN! FOUNDED BY Bernard Rimland, Ph.D - Late
Director, ARI
Jon Pangborn, Ph.D, - Bionostics Inc.
Sidney
Baker, MD., NY DAN is 12 this year. Was started
because of the belief that autism is treatable
and not an incurable lifelong disability needing
mgt with psychiatric drugs. The three gents
mentioned above deeply believed that there are
metabolic, biomedical, immunological and
gastrointestinal abnormalities in children with
autism. Repairing these abnormalities can lead to
recovery from autism.DAN is made up of
knowledgeable scientists, researchers and parents
whose mission is to provide parents and
professionals with a timely consensus as to the
safest and most effective treatment options for
children with developmental problems in the
autism spectrum. In order to accelerate
the development and dissemination of information
that will be helpful to doctors and families of
children with autism, ARI convened the first DAN
conference in Dallas in 1995 .Currently, DAN
organizes bi-annual conferences, that helps to
produce a base of physicians who employ rational
and scientifically sound approaches to the
diagnosis and treatment of autism.

WHY IS MY CHILD AUTISTIC
  • PRE EXISTING
  • WEAKNESS
  • GSH Metabolism
  • Folate and Vit B12
  • chemistry
  • Metallothionein
  • dysfunction
  • Detoxification pathway
  • impairment
  • - Sulphation pathway
  • - Methylation pathway
  • - Oxidative stress
  • Enzyme deficiency
  • DPPIV, Gastrointestinal
  • STRESSORS
  • Heavy metal toxicity,
  • Environmental toxins insult and chemicals
  • Viral infections- measles, polio, CMV
  • Yeast infections - Candida, molds
  • Bacterial infections like, streptococcus
    infection (PANDAS), gram negative rods,
    clostridia
  • Others Lyme, chronic inflammations, overuse of
    antibiotics, brain/immune dysfunction

  • The body may produce antibodies to these agents.
These antibodies may then cross react with our
own tissues creating an autoimmune reaction
    molecular mimicry

.

Heavy Metal Toxicity and Toxic Environmental
Pollutants
  • Heavy metals mercury, lead, cadmium, aluminum
  • antimony
  • MERCURY
  • Causes DNA damage across the BBB and inhibits
  • mononuclear phagocytosis.
  • Destabilizes the thiol chemistry and injures
    methylation,
  • adversely affecting a child's biochemistry
    and immunologic integrity.
  • Inhibits and inactivates methionine synthesis
which is important for the GSH synthesis
  • Inhibits DPP4/CD26 , adenosine metabolism,
  • Destroys the intestinal tract and can increase
its permeability leading to leaky gut syndrome
  • POTENTIAL OUTCOMES
  • Autism, failure to thrive, increased salivation
    ,poor
  • eye contact, disinterested, pink disease, Brain
  • damage\mental retardation, incordination,
    blindness,
  • seizures or tremors, sensory disturbances, vision
    and
  • hearing changes, memory problems ,irritability,
  • inability to speak, lung damage, nausea,
    vomiting,
  • PERSISTENT ORGANIC
  • POLLUTANTS (POPs)
  • Pythalates, pesticides,
  • herbicides, bisphenol,
  • PCBs, PBDE,DDT
  • Difficult to detox, stored
  • in fat indefinitely,
  • interferes with hormonal

Metallothionein Dysfunction ( MT)
  • MT is a short linear, s-shaped chain of A.A rich
in cysteine. Each MT binds up to 7zn 13 Cu,
Found in high levels in hippocampal region in the
brain - impt area of learning, memory behavior
control. Also in Amygdala - impt in development
of socialization skills and emotional memory.
Impairment or damage of the brain before 3 yrs
    decreases its fxn
  • Ferries zn into peripheral tissues, aids in the
immune cells in thymus and lymphoid system. The
Zn also activate DPP4 that breaks down
    caseomorphins and gluteomorphine.
  • Excellent antioxidant - neutralizes the excess
H2O2 toxins produced after killing of
bacteria/viruses by WBC. Binds tightly to heavy
    metals and renders them harmless
  • Binds cu therefore reducing its effect on short
    term memory failure, concentration reduction,
    anxiety impulsive behavior.

11
Metallothionein Dysfunction ( MT)
  • In the intestine, it functions in the synthesis
    of digestive enzymes carboxypeptidase,and amino
peptidase which breaks down proteins, enhance the
production of stomach acids, protects against
inflammation. In pineal gland, it manufactures
    melatonin which normalizes sleep
  • Regulates taste texture discrimination on the
    tongue
  • Female hormone induces the manufacture of MT
while testosterone enhances the toxicity of
    mercury.
  • Destabilized by Zn depletion, abnormal GSS
system, deficiency in cysteine, genetic mutation,
toxic metals , excess cu, inflammation,
    infections, stress, free radicals

12
.
  • Methylation Pathway - Necessary for the way for
energy delivery and activation of electochemical
processes that are required for cellular
    (neuronal) perception and responses
  • Glutathione - Major antioxidant, plays a major
role in detoxification esp Hg, helps regenerate
    epithelial cells, potentiates methylation
  • Consequences of decreased GSH -- decreases
    detoxification, degeneration of gut epithelium
    leading to increased permeability and
    autoimmunity, abnormal immune function, decreased
    antioxidant capacity
  • Aids GSH Vit B12
  • Inhibits GSH Hg

DAN! BIOMEDICAL APPROACH Summary
Autistic Children are individuals treat the i
ndividuals problem! the childs autism is not a
single entity its a spectrum of disorders with
multiple contributing causes. To proceed, all y
ou have to do is decide what do
we do next ? Dont try to do everything at once.
Always proceed with care. Take one step at a ti
me. For professionals listen to parents, they a
re your teachers. Do all you can for the child
but please do no harm.

DOES IT ALWAYS WORK
  • Severe inborn errors of metabolism missing or
damaged genes Retts Syndrome, Fragile X Cerebal
Palsy and others NOT CORRECTABLE (YET), SOME
    IMPROVEMENTS MAYBE
  • But - not forever. PKU featured autism in 40
now now PKU autism is very rare.
  • MOST TODAY, AUTISTIC CHILDREN CAN RECOVER OR BE
    SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVED.

17

WEYOU CAN DO IT
  • Listen, learn and ask questions
  • Read the book DAN MANUAL
  • Seek professional help
  • Each child with autism is an individual
  • Proceed carefully
  • One step at a time
  • Keep records
  • Their might be regression
  • You can do it
  • Talk to, and reassure the kids, they are
    listening.
  • Let others/parents educate you
  • HARD QUESTION - Have we done every thing we can
for this child? DONT EVER LOOSE HOPE
