• The Aryans

Hinduism

• Hindu is the Iranian variation for the name of a
  river referred to as the Indus
• Combination of Aryanism and some of the Native
  Indian belief systems
• Mainly monotheistic
• Belief in Reincarnation
• There is one ultimate god, Brahman, which is made
  up of Brahma the creator, Vishnu the perpetuator,
  and Shiva the destroyer.

Jainism

• Jainism is a derivative of Hinduism
• Jainist doctrines first appeared during c.800
  B.C.E., but became popular when Vardhamana
  Mahavira, a son of a prominent ruler of the time,
  turned to Jainism in c. 700 B.C.E
• Jainists believed that everything in the universe
  had a soul

The Buddha

• Siddhartha Gautama started Buddhism
• When he was born his father was a governor and he
  was supposed to be his successor
• Father sheltered him because he did not want him
  to experience misery only happiness
• On a chariot ride he saw a sick man, old man, and
  a corpse

• He asked his driver for an explanation and
  learned about human nature and suffering
• Another day he saw a monk and learned that some
  people will take their selves out of their
  regular life and live a holy life to perfect the
  spiritual aspects of their lives
