What do you need?
  • Digital video and/or still camera
  • Tripod
  • Firewire cable (video)
  • External microphone headphones
  • Mac computer w/firewire capability iMovie
    software
  • Hard drive space
  • Storyboard forms
  • Imagination!

Film 101
  • Limit panning and zooming
  • Zoom in or out to set up a shot.
  • Pan only when you have a good reason.
  • Use a tripod.
  • Types of shots and their purposes
  • Wide shots establish context.
  • Medium shots (waist up) establish relationships.
  • Close shots reveal detail.

  • Understand shots vs. scenes
  • Mind the background.
  • Capture footage for cutaways and cut-ins.
  • Cutaways a shot of someone or something else
    that adds interest to the story (news report
    example).

  • Click and hold save file as .jpg or .gif

Beginning your project
  • New Project Save
  • Bring video in hook up the camera to the
    computer via the firewire port. Click Import to
    start and stop downloading video.
  • Bring in a photo File Import file.
  • Drag clips to the timeline.
  • Change the duration of still picture clips
  • Type new time in time box and press return.

Adding titles
  • Click on the Titles button below the shelf.
  • Titles may be placed over a black screen or over
    video/still picture
  • Type in the title (chose font size color)
  • Title effects
  • Drag title effect (T) to the timeline.

Transitions
  • Click in timeline where you want the transition
    to go. Do not use transitions within a scene.
  • Select an effect and a speed.
  • Drag the transition to that spot in the timeline.

Effects
  • Experiment with effects to see how they change
    your video.
  • Select spot in timeline where you want the
    effect.
  • Apply the effect by clicking the Apply button.
    Click Commit if you are sure you want to keep
    that effect.

Sound
  • Click on the Audio button below the shelf.
  • Record voiceovers using built-in or external
    mike. Click Record Voice to start and stop
    recording.
  • For an external mike, go to the Apple Menu,
    choose Control Panels Sound Input External
    Mic.
  • Bring in music from a CD.
  • Insert a CD when the tracks appear, choose one
    to record. You can record all or part of the
    track.
  • Add a sound effect from iMovie.
  • You can choose sounds such as Drum Roll and
    Footsteps, to name a few.

  • Adjust volume on clips and audio tracks.
  • Using an alternate sound program for recording
  • If you need to transport the sound files to other
    computers
  • Freeware program Sound Recorder allows you to
    record in AIFF and name files.

  • Once you find an image to download, click on the
    image once.
  • If there is an option to choose a full size
    image, click on it.

  • 3. Click and hold the mouse button down on the
    full-sized image until a menu pops up.
  • Still holding the mouse button down, choose
    Download Image to Disk.

  • 5. Decide where to save this image. (For
    example, Macintosh HD/ Pictures.) Name the image.
    Leave the file extension (.jpg or .gif) at the
    end of the name.

Inserting Still Pictures into iMovie
  • Go to the File menu, and choose Import File.
  • In the Import File dialogue box, navigate to
    Macintosh HD and then your Pictures folder.

  • Click on Open. Now double-click the name of the
    picture you want to use. The picture will appear
    on the screen and on your shelf!
  • Drag the image to the timeline to put it in your
    movie. Remember that you decide how long it stays
    on the screen.

Advanced iMovie
  • Crop clips
  • Drag small (pop-up triangle) under the clip
    window to select what you want to save. The
    yellow bar shows what you want to keep.
  • Split clips
  • Edit Split video (audio) clip at playhead
  • Extract audio
  • Advanced Extract audio

Finishing Up
  • File Export movie
  • Export to digital video camera if you want a
    videotape.
  • Hook digital camera up to VCR and record.
  • Export to QuickTime for the web, for a CD, to
    email
