organizations representing a broad range of
expertise and experience, not just in disability,
but also in fields associated with homeownership
such as mortgage financing, housing development
and real estate.

prospective coalition members and others about
people with disabilities and the importance of
Texas HOYO values.

Down Payment and Closing Cost Assistance Up to
15,000, based on family income, to assist with
down payment and closing expenses.

Home Modifications Removing architectural
barriers and/or adding accessibility features (up
to 20,000 through Texas HOYOthe amount varies
based on assessment).

17Lenders offer targeted mortgage products
Fannie Mae loans are targeted to low- to
middle-income families and individuals, including
HomeChoiceSM a product developed specifically
for people with disabilities who are first-time
home buyers.
18Community Lending
- Mortgage counselors specially trained in
affordable lending products and services - Down payment assistance available through local
programs - Mortgage loans (also known as portfolio
loans) offered as part of efforts to comply with
the federal Community Reinvestment Act.
19New Market
- Participating in the Texas HOYO effort and
partnering with Fannie Mae has provided a new
population of people not previously outreached to
for mortgage lending. - Mortgage lending staff participate in awareness
building about the housing needs of a person with
a disability. - It is good business!

Long-standing myths and stereotypes about people
with disabilities pose serious barriers in
developing productive relationships with lenders,
realtors and others in the housing industry.

disabilities are more likely to have limited
income, lower cash reserves and higher
disability-related expenses.
