- Maintaining high and rigorous standards for what
teachers should know and be able to do, - Providing a national voluntary system certifying
teachers who meet these standards, and - Advocating related education reforms to integrate
National Board Certification in American
education and to capitalize on the expertise of
National Board Certified Teachers.
5Why Standards for Accomplished Teaching?
- According to the National Board for Professional
Teaching Standards, the following objectives are
the focus of standards for an accomplished
teacher - To develop qualified teachers
- To prepare students for the future
- To define and measure goals for teachers and
schools - To provide a foundation and common frame of
reference and - To link teaching standards to actual teacher
practice in the classroom.

developmental age groups, covering more than 95
of PreK-12 education.

8The Process
- The certification process is comprised of two
major components and can take the better part of
a year to complete.

- Candidates complete 10 entries.
- The components consist of
- Four portfolio entries of classroom practice.
- Six constructed response exercises administered
at a computer-based testing center. - The components are assessed by trained teachers
in their certificate area.

- Describe, analyze and reflect on
- student work
- professional practice
- classroom interactions
- Videotape their own classroom activities
- Present student work demonstrating growth over
time - Document accomplishments with students families
and local/professional communities.
11Assessment CenterMeasuring Content Knowledge
- Schedule Half-day appointment
- Computer testing centers located across the
state - Respond to six computer-delivered prompts
- Allowed 30 minutes for each typed response
- Demonstrate breadth and depth of content
knowledge - Focus of questions associated with the
certificate field.

16 Louisiana NBC Subsidy Program Eligibility
- To be eligible for NBC, the applicant must have
- A Bachelors degree,
- A valid teaching license, and
- Completed three (3) years of teaching.

- Complete an online application located at LDE
website - Write an essay (no more than 1000 words)
describing, analyzing, and reflecting upon your
teaching practice in light of National Standards - Rubric
- Aligns with NBPTS scoring guide for portfolio
entries/assessment center exercises - Based on a 4-point scale
- Selection of Candidates
- Essays are scored and ranked by NBCTs

- Writing Seminar

- Assigned mentor to promote professional growth
through NBC process

- State Deadlines
- Submit Online Subsidy Application by May 15,
2007. - Submit Employment Verification form to LDE by
October 1, 2007. - Apply to NBPTS and submit 565 by October 15,
2007. - Submit National Board Employment Verification
Eligibility forms to NBPTS by November 15, 2007. - Failure to submit documents and fees by required
date will result in forfeiture of state subsidy
funds.

- Established to provide support for teachers
applying for National Board Certification in
Louisiana. - Allows teachers to network with candidates as
well as LA NBCTs trained to provide candidate
support. - Easily accessible location for all subsidy
application forms and candidate support
documents.

- Take One! is
- A new offering from the National Board for
Professional Teaching Standards - For educators interested in experiencing the
highly praised professional attributes of
National Board Certification. - Allows educators to begin the process on a
smaller scale by submitting only one portfolio
