Heart Pulse Rates

Introduction
Introduction
  • This is a Year 9 Science Project carried out by
Joshua Lam, Fabien Schaeffer and Janam Shah.
  • Our group has chosen to study on how human heart
pulse rate is affected by different physical
    activities
  • This presentation describes the study method
used, information collected and analysis of the
    results.

3
Study Method
  • Firstly, the group researched from the internet
the pulse rates at different age groups under
normal and sport conditions. These data are used
    as a reference.
  • Secondly, the pulse rates of three participants
    were measured under normal condition.
  • The participants then carried out a designated
physical activity. Their pulse rates were
measured again during and immediately after the
activity. The experiment was repeated on the
    next day with another activity.
  • The results were then studied and compared with
    our Hypothesis and Control.

4
Hypothesis
  • The more vigorous the sport that people carry out
, the higher the heart pulse rate will reach.
  • This is because the human body needs to adjust
for additional demand for oxygen and energy
    during the activities.

5
Variables
  • In this experiment, the amount of time spent on
each activity was varied as well as changing the
type of activity e.g. football, running etc.
  • Collectively, this effectively vary the
intensiveness of activities each of us carries
    out.
  • However, our group did not vary the age group as
our group only wanted to study the results of the
    age group 13-14.

6
Field Measurements
  • Three participants were requested to carry out a
series of sport activities throughout a week
  • Name Age
  • Janam 14
  • Joshua 13
  • Fabien 13
  • The activities include
  • Football
  • Shuttle run
  • Sit-ups
  • Push-ups
  • Their pulse rates were measured before and
    immediately after each activity
  • The results were also compared with data from
similar studies obtained from the internet.

7
Equipment
  • The following equipment were used to carry out
    the experiment
  • Stop watches
  • Video cameras
  • Measuring tapes
  • Pulse monitor
  • And a football !!

8
Control
  • The average heart rates of the following age
brackets during exercise are used as the
    reference

Analysis
  • We then compared our results with our control and
    our hypothesis.
  • Generally, the more vigorous and the more
demanding the activity is, your heart pulse rate
    tends to go higher.
  • From our results, we can see that football is the
most demanding sport that we did, which is
followed by running, push ups and then sit ups.
  • As we calculated, football is about 15 more
    demanding than the sit ups.
  • We also noticed that our heart rate are very
similar to the ones posted on the health related
    website.

15
Conclusion
  • The studies that our group show that the heart
beat rate increases when the exercise becomes
    more vigorous and longer. So
  • Generally, the more vigorous and the more
demanding the activity is, the heart rate
    increases.
  • The fitter you are, the less increase you have.
This is because your body doesnt require as much
    oxygen as less fit people.
  • Your heart has a highest level of pulse rate that
it can get to. This varies with age, as well as
    your fitness level.

16
  • Findings
  • Human body adjusts its heart pulse rate
    according to different activity levels
  • This is necessary as the body needs more oxygen
and different amount of energy for different
    activities
