6Typical Problem Statement
- Need to aggregate data from diverse devices,
process it, and present it to various parts of
command, control or decision making organizations - Current methodologies, are typically proprietary
integration solutions, are not cost effective - Effective solutions should be based on a
Services Oriented Architecture at the device
level. This way, standards could be applied that
manufacturers could follow to allow new sensors,
actuators and complex devices to be integrated
effectively. - Legacy sensors/actuators also need a way to be
integrated in a cost effective manner. - SODA model shifts the burden of creating an
integration interface from the enterprise and
system integrators, to appropriate point in the
manufacturer supply chain - Enterprise can focus on higher level
functionality - Enterprise doesnt have to maintain expertise in
low-level subject areas - More investment can be directed at interactions
can take place between the business logic and the
devices themselves.
7Open Source Proposal
- Architecture and implementations have proven
highly - effective in a range of complex device-based
solutions - Components in use today in SODA-like products
and solutions - Community approach can provide supply chain
incentives and accelerate standards-based
services at SOA level - Initiated
- Open source contribution of product-level device
adapter components based on Eclipse and
Equinox/OSGi (with tooling) - Open source contribution of SODA reference
implementation
