Generation Iowa Commission Road Map to Recruit
and Retain Young People to Iowa
30
Iowas Brain Drain Our population is growing
less educated
  • Iowa is Americas Schoolhouse Top in the
Midwest (6th in US) as a net importer of
    college students
  • But Iowa is a net exporter of its young,
    educated professionals (YPs), from college
    graduation to 32 y/o
  • Each year, Iowa loses the gains made in college
years, and an additional 4 of our YP population.
  • Since 2000, our Brain Drain is 4th worst in the
    nation
  • Brain Drain hurts Economic growth and
productivity are closely linked to the growth in
    higher education

31
Economic Growth slows, as educated Iowans leave
the state (Net migration data for 1995-2000, for
all ages)
32
Why do educated young people leave Iowa? What do
YPs want?
  • Highest Priority
  • High-Paying Job in their Field of Study
  • Other Tie-Breaker Priorities
  • Demographic-Specific Amenities and Attractions
  • Options for Career Advancement Mentoring
  • Cost-of-living, including Repayment of Student
    Debt

33
Why they leave Iowas Wages Lag
  • Iowas Wages Lag the Region and the Nation
  • Iowa ranks 43rd in the nation in wages, with
wages 19 below the nations average
  • Lagging wages cut across nearly all of Iowas
industries, professions and rural / urban options
  • Low wages, paired with the nations 6th highest
student loan debt, force our college graduates to
    pursue higher wage opportunities
  • Young professionals cite the wage gap as the 1
    reason they leave

34
So what can we do?
  • Legislative/community Initiatives
  • Higher education tax credit
  • Student loan education
  • Expansion of career pathways
  • Development of amenities

35
Employer Best Practices
  • Understanding of generational differences
  • Gen X and Y (i.e. Millenials) tend to be
    opinionated, autonomous, yet collaborative.
  • Critical viewpoint almost to a point of
    skepticism, but still seek praise.
  • Very resourceful, efficient, and need
    flexibility.
  • Appreciate and seek diversity.
  • Teamwork strength creates weakness in leadership.

36
Best Practices
  • Tech savvy communication style that embraces a
    personalized approach.
  • Fulfillment and self actualization are dictated
    by personal values.
  • Opportunity for advancement and validation of
    success.

37
Recruiting Generation Iowa
  • Be community focused
  • Internship program creation
  • Development of a recruitment strategy
  • - Relationships with colleges
  • - Raise salaries for sought or critical needs
  • - Focus on total compensation (sign on bonuses,
    tuition assistance, wellness benefits, transit)
