pertains to music lyrics?
13Lets Clarify
- What is censorship?
- the suppression of ideas, information, and
expression that individuals, groups, or
government officials find objectionable or
dangerous - So what is music censorship?
- Music censorship is any act that supports or
allows the suppression, control, or banning of
music or music-related works against the desire
of its creator or intended audience. - If a particular group forces the artist to edit
his/her song, yet the artist does not want to,
then according to the definition, he/she is being
censored musically. The group is not allowing the
artist to fully express his/her thoughts and
opinions through music.
14Lets Clarify
- Whats the difference between violations of First
Amendment rights and private and corporate acts
of censorship? - The First Amendment provides that the government
cannot limit our rights to free expression
however, the first amendment allows individual
companies to set their own standards about
content.
15Commonly Censored Content
- Violent Content
- Sexually Explicit Content
- Sexist Content
- Cussing
- Discriminatory Content (Race, Sexual Orient.)

20Music Leads to Violence?
- Craig Anderson (2003) at Iowa State University
and colleagues found that students who listened
to songs with violent lyrics (songs by the
Beastie Boys, Cypress Hill and Run DMC) were more
likely to make aggressive associations in
subsequent psychological tests. - To make sure they were testing for the effect of
lyrics only, the researchers exposed them to
violent and non-violent songs by the same band.
Individual personality differences to hostility
were also assessed and taken into account.
21Music Leads to Violence?
- John McCollum commits suicide while listening to
Ozzie Osbournes song, Suicide Solution
(Suicide is the only way out. Don't know what
it's really about.) - Ronald Ray Howard, an eighth grade drop-out, was
convicted of shooting Texas State Trooper Bill
Davidson. Howard had been listening to the song
Sister Souljah by Tupac Shakur (Cops on my

Remember Rodney King And I blast his punk ass.) - The murders at Columbine HS in Littleton, CO have

sticker that read "X-Rated Parents Strongly
Cautioned Some Material May Not Be X-tra Hype
And Inappropriate For Squares And Suckers." - Participants such as CBS, RCA, AM and Warner
avoided labeling anything at all after noting a
serious drop in CD sales.
