  • Pinochet was born in Valparaíso on November 25,
    1915.
  • Was a general who was President of Chile from
    1973 to 1990.

Military Coup of 1973
  • Pinochet was appointed Army Commander in Chief on
    8/23/1973.
  • On September 11 the military overthrew Allendes
    government.
  • Allende officially committed suicide just as
    troops burst into his office.

Security Operations
  • Due to the communist government, (Allende)
    Pinochet implemented a series of security
    operations in which around 3,000 people were
    killed and around 30,000 or more were tortured.

Military Junta
  • A military junta was established immediately
    following the over through of Allende.
  • The military junta was represented by the Army,
    Navy, Air Force, and the National police.

    CIA.
  • As commander in chief of the oldest military
    branch Pinochet became president of the Junta.
  • As supreme chief of the Nations Pinochet changed

  • Pinochet's legacy has been debated over the
    years. Some view him as a brutal dictator while
    others credit him for stopping Chile from sliding
    into instable economic reforms.

  • Lowered taxes on income.
  • The percentage of Chileans without adequate
    housing increased from 27 to 40 percent between
    1972 and 1988.

Arrest and Trial
  • Pinochet's regime has been accused of systematic
    and widespread human rights violations both in
    Chile and abroad, including mass-murder, torture,
    kidnapping, illegal detention, and press
    censorship.
  • On October 17, 1998, while visiting the United
    Kingdom for medical treatment, Pinochet was
    arrested on a Spanish provisional warrant for the
    murder in Chile of Spanish citizens while he was
    president. (Which were later dropped due to
    medical reasons)
  • Since 1998 Pinochet has been accused of commiting
    many crimes such as torture, mass-murder,
    stealing money and so on.

Final Days
  • Pinochet suffered a heart attack on the morning
    of December 3, 2006.
  • On December 10, 2006 Pinochet died from heart
    failures.
  • Street protests broke out throughout the country
    following the death of Pinochet.
  • Pinochets body was cremmted in Parque del mar
    cemeterey, which is located in Concon, Chile.
