• Artist/scholar - born in France, discovered
  his heritage when he traveled to Mexico
• Found a home in the cultural diversity of
  Hawaii
• Devout Catholic whose art reflected both his
  own beliefs and his respect for native
  people.

Who was Jean Charlot? - 2

• Drew painted, specialized in fresco
  murals,excelled in lithographic printmaking
• Wrote critical reviews, books on art and a
  play in Hawaiian that was performed
• Lived a life informed by his beliefs, his
  art, his scholarship.
