  recs. into SAM (school assistant module) online
• Mar. 9-25th Registration information presented
  to rising 9th graders and work begins on 9th
  grade and graduation planning
• Mar 13-20th High school course selections are
  entered in SAM/SPAN (Student Parent Access Net)
  from home or school

2 Courses of Study

• Future Ready Core for 9th graders
• entering in 2009-10 and Later
• 2. Occupational- for only selected IEP students
  who are excluded from EOC Proficiency Level
  requirements

Future Ready? What Is It?

• It is the NEW Course of Study developed to
  provide a strong academic foundation so that
  students are prepared and have many options when
  they graduate from high school whether they go to
  college or to work. The main idea is that
  students graduate. . . .

New Graduation Requirements

• Course requirements- an additional math course
  through Algebra II, 4 electives concentrated in
  one area of interest
• Testing requirements- pass the 5 essential
  end-of-course tests
• Graduation Project- is the culmination of 4 years
  of high school work

Course requirements

• A 4th math course was added for students who
  previously might not have pursued the
  College/University Prep COS
• 2 elective credits from CTE (career and technical
  ed.), Arts, or Second Language and a recommended
  4 elective credits concentrated in one field of
  interest such as CTE, JROTC, ARTS ED, or other
  subject
• A new total of 26 total credits

Testing Requirements

• Five EOC tests must be passed- counts as 25 of
  grade
• Algebra I
• Biology
• Civics and Economic
• English I
• U.S. History
• Also the Computer Skills test and
  other local requirements such as service hours

NC Graduation Project

• provides students a means to demonstrate what
  they know and are able to do as they prepare to
  graduate from high school. It includes
• A Research Paper
• A Product
• A Portfolio
• An Oral Presentation

Block Schedule

• Students take 4 courses/credits each semester.
• Each course is 90 minutes( some exceptions).
• An entire years worth of curriculum is
  compressed into one semester.

English

• English I, II, III, IV are required for
  graduation from high school
• (honors and advanced placement level classes
  carry more weight for a higher GPA)
• Students must pass the English I end-of-course
  test to graduate

Social Studies

• World History
• 2. Civics and Economics
• 3. US History
• Must have a credit in each of the classes
  above C E and US History are 2 of the
  essential 5 requiring an end-of-course test (must
  pass the class and pass the EOC with level 3 or 4)

Science

• Biology
• Physical- physical science, chemistry, or physics
• Earth/Environmental
• Three credits are required for graduation
• (one in each of the above areas)

• MATH

• MATH

• 4 credits in the following are required for FRC
  graduation
• Algebra I,
• Geometry,
• Algebra II,
• 4th Math Course-
• (aligned with post high school plans
• (in rare instances a student may be able to opt
  out of the above math sequence)

Math continued. . . .

• 4 Credits (Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II)
  OR (Integrated Math I, II, III) The 4th Math
  Course is to be aligned with the students post
  high school plans. In the rare instance a
  principal exempts a student from the FRC math
  sequence, the student would be required to pass
  Algebra I and Geometry or Algebra I and II, or
  Integrated Math I and II and two other
  application-based math courses.

Second Languages

• No longer required for graduation for rising 9th
  graders but . . .
• Minimum of 2 credits of the same language ARE
  required for admission to UNC System of Colleges
• Most local high schools do not recommend taking a
  foreign language in the 9th grade.

Arts

• Students may receive honors credit in no more
  than 2 courses in each arts discipline
• (visual, dance, theatre, choral, instrumental
  music)

Healthful Living

• Students must pass Healthful Living I
• Generally recommended to be taken in the 9th
  grade.

Career and Technical Education

• The Future Ready Core Course of Study recommends
  that students earn 4 credits in a subject area
  concentration
• To earn the designation as a CTE completer,
  students must have 4 CTE credits, one of which is
  in a capstone or advanced class

UNC System Admission Requirements

• 6 credits in Language 4 in English (A) minimum
  of 2 in a second language (B)
• 4 credits in Math Alg. I and II, Geom., and
  one credit beyond Alg. II Alg. I and II, and two
  credits beyond Alg. II, or Integrated Math I,
  II, and III and one credit beyond Integrated Math
  III. -- Recommended that prospective students
  take a math credit in
• the 12th grade.

• 3 credits in Social Studies to include one credit
  in US History

Apex High School

• If you take Honors English, must take Honors
  World History
• Students in standard levels English and World
  History are in 45 minute classes for the entire
  year.
• AOIT registrants- Register as usual, if selected,
  the coordinator will reschedule.
• Counselor from Apex will be here, Wednesday,
  March 18th, 730 to 1000, sign up in back or
  email blacorte_at_wcpss.net.

Panther Creek

• English- Most students placed in Honors English-
  unless EOG level 12
• English not paired with World History
• Ryan Cummings( Dean) will be here Thursday, March
  19th , 730-1000 ,sign up at back table or email
  blacorte_at_wcpss.net.

Cary High

• Offers a year long English1/ Study Skills course.
  Incorporates study skills and test-taking
  strategies.
• Navy Junior ROTC program offered. If not your
  base school, you may apply for a transfer.

SPAN Registration

• Option 1-Students Register from Home
• Students will receive username, password, and
  directions to register from home.
• Opens to Students Friday, March 13th
• Students will finalize from home and print out 2
  copies, get parent to sign and bring to Mr.
  Decker.

• Option 2-Students Register from School
• Students will register in the computer lab at
  school.
• Begins March 16th
• Students will finalize at school, print out two
  copies, and bring one home to be signed by
  parent.

More SPAN

• Students will be able to view their teachers
  recommendations when they register for their
  classes.
• They can choose to follow their teachers
  recommendations or select a different course with
  a waiver.

Important Dates

• March 20th- Deadline to register online with
  Span. Turn in verification form to homeroom.
• March 25th- Deadline to turn in 4 year graduation
  plan to homeroom teacher.

A Word to the Wise

• Remember to balance your academic and social
  life.
• Get involved( check out clubs/ teams/organizations
  ) Great way to make friends, helps you learn who
  you are, and use for college applications.
• Get to know your high school counselor.
• Make good friends.
• Know and obey laws and school rules.
