16Use the Oregon Registry Training Education
Criteria
- To determine
- Acceptable types of training
- Required content of training
- Required length of training
- Date limits for training
- Types of documentation
- Requirements for documentation
17Determine Pathway Degree/Certificate
- Look for a CDA certificate
- Look for a diploma or a transcript of a completed
degree - Determine the highest degree completed
- Consult the Oregon Registry Steps
- Decide Does the applicant clearly fit into the
degree/certificate pathway?
18Degree/Certificate PathwayPay Attention to
Details
- Determine Is the highest degree completed from
the United States (in-country degree ) or from a
country other than the United States
(out-of-country degree)? - Next, Look at the list of degrees in footnote 4
on the Oregon Registry Steps - Determine Is the highest degree completed in the
field of childhood care and education, or out of
the field of childhood care and education ? - Determine Is there additional college coursework
completed beyond the highest degree completed?
19Degree/Certificate PathwayDecide who can best
assist
- IF Steps 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, or 12 on the
degree/certificate pathway with an in-country
degree and an in-the-field degree, then... YES, I
can assist. - IF Steps 7 through 12 in the degree/certificate
pathway with an out-of-country degree or an
out-of-the-field degree, then No, I need to have
this person work directly with OCCD. - IF Step 7.5, Step 8.5, or Step 9.5 in the
degree/certificate pathway with additional
college coursework completed beyond the highest
degree completed, then No, I need to have this
person work directly with OCCD.
20Degree/Certificate PathwayComplete the

21Determine StepStep 1 through Step 6
- Sort the training education by core knowledge
category - Sort the training education by Community Based
Training or College Course Credit - Calculate the total number of hours of training
education - Decide what Step fits the training education
- Determine who can best assist
22Sort Training Hours by Training Types
- Are they College Course Credits (CCC) or
Community Based Training (CBT) hours? - Use Training Education Work Sheet to sort
training hours into College Course Credit (CCC)
or Community Based Training (CBT)
23Sort Documents byCore Knowledge Category
- Use Core Body of Knowledge to sort training
education documents into the 10 core knowledge
categories - Use the following parts of each core knowledge
category to assist in the sorting - Definitions
- Key concepts
- Supporting explanations
- Sets of knowledge standards
- Sets of knowledge sample topics
24Practice 1 Sort by CKC
- Say you are working with an applicant who has
taken a training session called Hand washing
Stamp Out GERMS! - Look at the core knowledge category definitions
- Compare the session title to the title and
definition of the core knowledge category or
categories most likely to fit - Look up the core knowledge category in the Core
Body of Knowledge - Look at the key concepts, standards, and topics
- Decide which core knowledge category the training
will most likely fit - What is it?
- (Correct answer is on the next slide)
25ANSWER
- Hand washing Stamp Out GERMS!
- fits in the core knowledge category of
- Health, Safety, Nutrition
- Lets do another one...
26Practice 2 Sort by CKC
- Your applicant has taken a training session
called Ages Stages How Children Develop - Look at the core knowledge category definitions
27ANSWER
- Ages Stages How Children Develop fits in the
core knowledge category of - Human Growth Development
- Lets do another...
28Practice 3 Sort by CKC
- The applicant has taken a two-hour training
session called Children with Autism Partnering
with Families - Look at the core knowledge category definitions
- Compare the session title to the title and
definition of the core knowledge category or
categories most likely to fit (possibly two
different ones, right?) - Look up the core knowledge categories in the Core
Body of Knowledge - Look at the standards and topics
- Now decide which core knowledge category the
training will most likely fit. - Which is it?
- (Correct answer is on the next slide)
29ANSWER
- This one is a little harder.
- Look at both core knowledge categories Families
Community Systems and Special Needs - For each, look closely at the Set One standards
and topics - Notice on page 41 of the Core Body of Knowledge,
the Set One Standard that says, Introduction to
partnering with parents of special needs - So, the core knowledge category for this training
session is - Special Needs
30Practice 4 Sort by CKC
- The applicant has taken a two-hour training
session called Challenging Behavior or Typical
Developmental Stage? - Look at the core knowledge category definitions
- Compare the session title to the title and
definition of the core knowledge category or
categories most likely to fit (possibly two
different ones, right?) - Look up the core knowledge categories in the Core
Body of Knowledge - Look at the standards and topics
- Now decide which core knowledge category the
training will most likely fit. - Which is it?
- (Correct answer is on the next slide)
31NO ANSWER YET
- This one is even harder!
- Look at both core knowledge categories
Understanding Guiding Behavior and Human Growth
Development - For each, look closely at the Set One standards
and topics - Notice on page 45 of the Core Body of Knowledge,
the Set One Standard that says, Description of
behavior in context of personal factors, such as
developmental stages, temperaments, and learning
styles. Is it Understanding Guiding Behavior? - Notice on page 23 the Set One standard that says,
Introduction to social, emotional, cognitive,
and physical development. Is it Human Growth
Development? - Could be either
- What to do?
32What now ?
- Sounds like you and the applicant need more
information - You could have the applicant
- Get a copy of the description of the training
session from the training organization - Find an agenda or outline of the session
- Get documentation from the trainer or training
organization about content (letter or email) - Select the core knowledge category, based on this
new information - Attach a copy of this documentation to the
training certificate - Still stuck? Call OCCD at 1-877-725-8535 and ask
to speak to an Oregon Registry staff person
33Calculate Hours Total CKC
- Using the Training Education Work Sheet
- Add hours and calculate a total for each core
knowledge category - Add totals across core knowledge categories to
calculate a sum total of training education
hours - IF Total hours are anywhere from 12 hours to 119
hours - THEN The hours should fit into Step 1 through
Step 6
34Step 1 through Step 6Select Step
- Use Oregon Registry Steps Step 1 through Step 6
- Match total hours of training and education to
the required hours in the Step - Review the CKC requirements for the selected step
- If both the total hour and CKC requirements are
met, then thats it!
35Step 1 through Step 6Select Step
- (continued from previous slide)
- If the CKC requirements are not met, move to the
previous step, until you reach the step that
matches both the total hours and the CKC
requirements - If more than 119 total hours, with a minimum of
10 hours in each core knowledge category, then
move to Steps 7 and above to determine the
College Course Credit Community Based Training
path
36Practice 1 Select Step
- A CCD certificate family child care provider has
accumulated 60 hours of training in four core
knowledge categories (CKCs) - Go to the Oregon Registry Steps document to see
which Step includes 60 hours of training - How many CKCs are required at that Step?
- (Correct answer is on the next slide)
37ANSWER
- Step 4 requires 50 clock hours of training in at
least 4 CKCs - One of the CKCs must be Human Growth
Development and another CKC must be Understanding
Guiding Behavior - Does the applicants training include training in
those two CKCs? - If "YES", then Step 4 is the right step!
- If "NO", then move to the previous Step to see if
they meet the CKC requirements for Step 3
38Step 1 through Step 6Decide who can best assist
- IF total hours are anywhere from 12 hours to 119
hours, and the CKC requirements are met, then the
hours should fit into Step 1 through Step 6,

hours in the 10 CKCs, then Steps 1 through 6 are
not applicable - IF no completed degree or certificate, then
Degree/Certificate pathway is not applicable - THEN, look at the College Course Credit
Community Based Training Pathway (CCC CBT), and
determine if you can assist
40CCC CBT PathwayCalculate Hours
- If more than 119 total hours, including at least
10 hours in each CKC, then - Add hours and calculate total CCC and CBT hours
for each core knowledge category - Add the totals from each core knowledge category
to calculate a sum total of all CCC and CBT hours - Decide which of three specific paths to use
- College Course Credits (CCC) only, or
- COMBINATION of College course credits AND
Community based training , or - Community Based Training (CBT) only
41Practice 1 Selecting a Path
- An after school assistant coordinator has
accumulated 140 hours of community-based
training. What path would this applicant follow? - Go to the Oregon Registry Steps document to see
which path in the CCC CBT pathway includes only
community based training - Then, find the Step closest to 140 hours
- (Correct answer is on the next slide)
42ANSWER
- This applicant would use the Community Based
Training Only Path for Oregon Registry Steps 7
through 8.5 - Step 7, CCC CBT Pathway, CBT Only Path,
requires 120 clock hours of training with at
least 10 hours in each of the CKCs - Does the applicants training meet these CKC
requirements? - If "YES", then Step 7 in the CBT only Path is the
right step!
43Practice 2 Selecting a Path
- A head teacher in a preschool room has 30 hours
of community-based training and 22 semester
credits in early childhood education. What path
would this applicant follow? - Go to the Oregon Registry Steps document to see
