Introduction

• There are many things that contributed to the
  development of Canada. The beaver pelt hat was
  especially important because they were very
  popular and everyone wanted them and Canada had
  them.

What is it?

• This was a wide-brimmed hat that came into style
  in the late 16th century.

• The beaver pelt hat was a good hat because it was
  tight and would hold its shape better under
  rough wear and wettings than felt made from wool
  or any other type of fur.

What was it made of?

• The preferred material for the beaver pelt hat
  was the under fur of the beaver which matted
  tightly due to the tiny barbs on each on each
  hair.

How did it assist in the fur trade?

• It assisted the fur trade because from about
  1600 until mid 1850s the beaver pelt hats were
  in style
• They became something that everyone wanted from
  the fur trade.
• Also because the beavers were extinct in Western
  Europe and almost extinct in Scandinavia and
  Russia
• Canada was one of the places they could get
  beaver pelt hats.

Conclusion

• By the end of the 17th century the English felt
  hat industry took over the world until about the
  1840s when the less expensive silk hat came into
  style.
