Location Garment District, New York City As
a marketing and sales intern, I assisted with the
companys press and public relations, in-house
productions, showroom administration, and with
the company web store. Through this internship, I
developed an understanding of the buying and
selling processes, including sales accounting,
vendor/customer relations, and shipping goods to
customers. Because all designing and most
production was also done at the showroom, I also
gained better knowledge into the design and
production processes of luxury handbags and shoes.

Objectives are to define a buyers
responsibilities and understand the fundamentals
of retail math. Concepts included--mark-up (IMU,
MMU, CMU), gross margin, BOM and EOM, retail
book inventory, GMROI, open-to-buy, and profit
loss statements.
This is a 6-month plan created as if I were a
buyer for the womens denim divison at Macys.
The following memo explains the sales figures on
the spreadsheet and interprets them into a plan
of action.

15Fashion Advertising and Promotion
Objectives are to utilize strategies to help
establish a strong fashion brand analyze the
contemporary practices of fashion advertising
and cultivate an editorial eye to inform,
persuade, or entertain a targeted audience in the
fashion communication field.
This project was the development of a fashion
brand. My partner and I had to choose a product
category (designer sunglasses) and create our own
brand name and logo (VANITA).
We also had to create a full-page magazine
advertisement and signage, packaging, and
promotional materials.

Brand Name and Logo VANITA is the Italian
translation for vanity. (n.) excessive pride,
especially in ones appearance. The
signature VANITA logo is a gold, stylized Yellow
Jasmine flower that creates the shape of a V.
This flower symbolizes grace and elegance, as
does the woman who wears our products. The
combination of the colors plum and gold also
symbolizes VANITAs personality. Plum-
envy, sensuality, royalty, nobility, mystery,
wisdom, enlightenment, arrogance, flamboyance,
and gaudiness Gold- sunlight, optimism,
intelligence, idealism, wealth, greed,
femininity, gladness, and sociability Brand
Personality VANITA creates a personality
that equally blends sophistication, sincerity,
and femininity. The brand is intended to by
synonymous with opulence and the quality to
attract and delight.
The advertisement had to utilize the 5
advertising design elements the objective,
target audience, message theme, support, and
constraints and had to clearly convey our
brands personality.

Global Economy
Objectives are to focus on the key themes and
issues pertinent to the internationalization of
retailing and to analyze cultural, economic,
political, and legal factors that impact
international retailing and sourcing.
For our final group project, we had to do a
cultural analysis of India, including history,
climate, geography, languages, traditions and
customs, economy, social institutions, religion
and aesthetics, and then develop a luxury apparel
brand using the cultural themes found. We had to
create a concept, brand name and logo, design a
small line, and create promotional items and the
interior and exterior of a store layout.

that incorporated our knowledge of design
elements and principles in order to convey our
message as clearly and accurately as possible.

Objectives are to develop an understanding of
the life cycle of a fashion product, including
the fashion adoption process analyze the
fashion consumer and changing consumer values in
the fashion marketing process forecast fashion
trends and examine the roles and
responsibilities of fashion retailers.
For this trend forecasting project, our
groups had to examine upcoming trends for womens
skirts and shirts for Spring/Summer 2009 a year
and a half in advance, and develop at least 15
trend boards describing color, silhouette, mood
or spirit, fabrication, and detail. A few of my
examples included the color white, floral
inspirations, and menswear influences. These
trend boards would then be used by students in a
separate computer-aided design course to create a
line.
22Apparel Design Analysis
Objectives are to understand fashion as both
a design process and design product identify the
elements and principles of design, along with
their psychological and physical effects and
analyze the interactions of functional,
structural, and decorative levels of apparel
design.
In this Elements and Principles of Design
project, I developed a presentation that
demonstrated an example of each design element
and principle, explained how each was used, and
the physical and psychological effects they
created.

Objectives are to explore the relevance of
standardized testing in quality control of
textiles for end-use and serviceability through
analyzing fabric performance on the basis of
fiber content, yarn structures, fabrications, and
other processes and perform scientific test
methods using optical, physical, and chemical
testing, in order to evaluate the compatibility
of textile materials to their end-use.

professionalism among its members and to the
