- Assembly
- 30 PP3 units are assembled in one subrack or
special subracks - Insulating film applied on individual shield case
- A few drops of silicone to hold them together
- External clamp for rack mounting
- Kapton tape strips to cover screw-heads
- Extra kapton (or insulation film) inside the
clamp - Subracks in the pit 90 1 special
- Subracks on bench 19 2 special
- Installation
- Dummy Patch Panels were used during installation
of US side cables - Cables were tightened to horizontal bars to keep
to the right position - Cables have to be removed from the current
position and plugged in by groups/rows when the
PP3 subracks are installed - USA racks will be equipped with PP3 subracks
before installation of cables - Type IV or Type III plugged into PP3 is sequence
with testing
5PP3 Needs
- We need more PP3's 4261 PP3 units
- 173 are spares
- 139 empty shield cases
- There are spares in the middle of the rack
- to skip PS channels - interlock modularity
- and usually in groups (4-8) at the top or the
bottom - Often top or bottom subracks are not completely
used and we should optimize that occupancy with
empty shield cases - A few subracks of one row of PP3 are necessary
for the very full racks that dont have spares
already at the top or bottom - http//www-atlas.lbl.gov/ciocio/SCTcables/Racks_L
ayout - Special 200 PP3s to go in the first rack where
bigger connector hood were used - require more tolerance (shorter standoffs) for
connector to fit - 241 PP3 boards not assembled into shielding boxes
might be used for this purpose
6Type II ServicesSequence
- Sector 5 (top) and Sector 13 (bottom)
- heater cables, and DCS cables (completed)
- Sector 9 horizontal towards USA15 is currently
being installed - SCT fibres
- SCT power cables (384 Barrel and 494 Endcap
cables spares) - Barrel cables (side A and C) started 1 month ago
- Sector 3 next followed by
- Sector 1, 7, 11, 15
- Sequence in a sector is
- Tubes, fibres, heater cables, SCT cables, (Muon
chambers), - TRT cables, pixel cables
7Type II/III PP1 Parts Status
- INEO/Thurmelec are making double length harnesses
with type II cable and type III spliced, and type
II FCI/JST connectors on both ends as they
receive information about the lengths - Single length cables with FCT connector (PP3) are
produced when length finalized with test cable
measurement from cryostat to PP3 racks sector by
sector - Cables for Sector 9
- 288 Barrel 96 EC cables received
- 96 Barrel 247 EC 155 EC this week
- Cables for Sector 3
- Cables paths measured and single length cables
ordered - expected in 2 weeks
- Labels printed and sent to company
- Mapping defined drawings for installation are
made - Mapping for PP1 connectivity transferred to
Nicolas/Sigi - Rate of future deliveries (after April 14) 400
cables/week - PPB1 clamps, clips, cable tray covers are late
but coming next week - PPF1 most parts available
- Parts to improve connection of drain wire and
foil to clamp on order
8Type II/III cables Installation
- 288 Barrel cables installed
- almost all tested.
- So far all OK
- Problem with testing related to the grounding.
- If DPP1 is attached to the cryostat is at the
same potential as the cryostat Interference due
to large capacitance. - Quick check by modifying one dPPB1 (removed large
caps HVret-DPPB1 ground) to verify that - Then upgrade of software with loosen up cuts for
HVret line - it works now!
9Type II/III PP1 Installation
- BARREL
- Mechanical problems to fit layers of 6 cables
between clamp holder pins - The lower 6 cables tend to pop up out of the
clamp holder after being pressed in - They need vigorous shaping to fit between the
guide posts that are before the clamp (from 5.5
mm squeezed down to 4.8 mm) - The 2.5 mm high bridge clamp had to be removed
just to get the top layer of cables to fit under
the clamp - Will add metal braid for a reliable connection of
the foil to the clamp by the top layer
10Type II/III cables Installation
11Type II/III PP1 Installation
- ENDCAP
- Installation of first cables in sector 9 is
starting this week - Prototypes to understand how to insert drain
wires in the clamp holes - 5 holes/17 wires
- Group 4-5 drain wires crimp them in a ferrule and
catch the ferrule with the grub screws - Add redundancy to improve high frequency EMI
attenuation

- To meet this schedule we need more people present
at CERN - Critical area in the type II-III acceptance
installation and testing - Need two technical people to work in the cryostat
available all the time - In general I need one person to add to each major
activity - SCT participation very valuable to add to people
who are resident
16SCT Cable Shifts
17What to do
- http//www.hep.phy.cam.ac.uk/si-bin/sctworkplanner
.cgi - To sign up for shifts (and contact me because of
unexpected changing in rate delivery/testing
problems) - Safety courses
- 1) basic safety training course (level 1-2-3
video in B55) - http//safety-commission.web.cern.ch/safety-commi
ssion/SC-site/sc_pages/training/basic.html - 2) Level 4 for working in US15 Oxybox (we have
them) - If you have an AIS LOGIN (used for EDH
documents), you can follow the course from
anywhere - (even outside CERN) with AIS login by accessing
http//sir.cern.ch. - If you have no AIS LOGIN, you need to register at
the following address level4.training_at_cern.ch - 3) Level 4A mandatory to enter the ATLAS
underground areas - This course is composed of 4 modules Cryogeny,
Evacuation, Installation and Magnet. Each of
these modules is followed by a small test which
you have to take and pass. - If you do not yet have an AIS login, please
contact the ATLAS secretariat and ask
for this AIS account (they must be registered
with ATLAS). If this is not possible, we will
organise special training at CERN. - 4) make the access request on EDH
- 5) get your safety boots helmet (or borrow
them) - TRY TO GET AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE DONE BEFORE COMING
TO CERN
