6Case 1 Miss Smith
Miss Smith is 80 years old and lives alone in
sheltered accommodation bungalow in the Forest of
Dean. Miss Smith suffers from Parkinson's
disease, has visual impairment and mobility
issues. She has fallen on several occasions.
Miss Smith is enrolled in a Falls Programme to
help her address some of her mobility problems.
Being in sheltered accommodation she already has
a lifeline and her warden and niece would be
prepared to be her responders.

7Case 2 Mrs Thompson
Mrs Thompson is 87 years old and lives at home
with her son who is her main carer. A year ago
she had a stroke and clinically has recovered
well. A Community Stroke Coordinator has been
involved in her care at home. She has mobility
issues relating to her stroke and some short term
memory problems. She also has limited hearing
and wears a hearing aid.

8Case 3 Mr Jenkins
Mr Jenkins is 80 years old and lives alone. His
2 daughters visit on a daily basis between the 2
of them. He has recently been discharged from
hospital following 2 falls in 2 days. He has
reduced mobility and is suffering from short term
memory loss and needs prompting with his
medication which his daughters have been doing.
He lives in a ground floor flat in Stroud and
has a very good social network. His neighbour
collects him twice a week to take him to a
luncheon club. The local library volunteer group
also visit and bring him talking books.

which means that she is unable to digest her food
properly. She has had a large number of falls
which are mainly caused by her passing out due to
lack of nutrition. Mrs B was receiving 5 hours
of home care per week prior to her receiving her
falls detector. Cost of 5 hours homecare per
week 3,640 per year

Mrs J is registered blind and has been in
hospital several times in the last 12 months
following falls. Her previous hospital stays
over the last 12 months have cost the health
service 18,095.00. Mrs J daughter visits her
several times a day and both Mrs J and her
daughter are very keen for her to stay at home
and be independent.
