By the end of todays lesson you will
  • Understand why a healthy diet is so important.
  • Have explored what makes up a healthy diet.
  • Understand where different nutrients can be found
    and why we need them.

3
Why is what we eat so important
  • We need food for energy, growth, repair and good
    health.
  • We get energy from food and the muscles use it to
    enable them to work.
  • Food contains the materials and nutrients we need
    for growth and repair.
  • Our bodies need lots of different nutrients to do
lots of different jobs. Therefore we need a
    balanced and varied diet.

4
What are the components of a balanced diet?
  • Carbohydrates
  • Fats
  • Protein
  • Vitamins
  • Minerals
  • Water
  • Fibre

5
Carbohydrates
  • These are broken down into glucose to provide
    fast release energy.
  • Some glucose is stored as glycogen in the liver
    and muscles.
  • They provide approx 55 of our energy.
  • They are found in foods such as

6
Fats
  • Fats are also used for energy, depending on the
    exercise you are doing.
  • They release energy slower than carbohydrates.
  • Approximately 30 of our energy comes from fats.
  • Fat also provides us with insulation.
  • Fat can be found in

7
Carbohydrate or Fat????????
  • Long walk mainly fat
  • Slow Jog more glycogen
  • Sprint glycogen only
  • Jogging for a long time will use fat when
glycogen starts to be used up
  • Yahoo! Video Detail for running-machine.wmv
  • The fitter you are the more you will burn fat
    instead of glycogen.

8
Protein
  • Protein is needed to build cells, make blood and
    repair muscles.
  • You body can use protein for energy but only if
fat and carbohydrate has run out.
  • Proteins provide 15 of our energy.
  • We get protein from

9
Vitamins
  • Vitamins help in the formation of body tissues
and are necessary for all the chemical reactions
    in the body.
  • The body only needs tiny amounts of vitamins.
  • The important vitamins are A, C and D.

A
C
D
10
Minerals
  • Minerals are also important and only needed in
    small amounts.
  • Without iron you blood cannot carry oxygen!
(blood is red because it contains iron!!)
  • Without calcium youd have no bones!!!!
  • Minerals also help your body absorb the vitamins
    which you need.

11
Water
  • Water does not give you energy but is the main
component of all your bodily fluids!
  • If the level of water in your blood and body
fluids is too low water from the cells is sucked
    out and these cells die.
  • This is why it is important not to get dehydrated.

12
Fibre
  • High fibre foods provide little energy and cannot
    be digested.
  • However they make you feel full up so you dont
    over eat.
  • Fibre is a substance called cellulose and it is
this which the body cannot digest.
  • Fibre helps prevent bowel cancer and
    constipation.

13
Task 1.
  • As a class complete and stick into you books the
    analysing different foods chart.

14
Task 2.
  • Read and copy pages 102 103. It will build on
what we have just talked about.
