5
Independent Hospices
  • Income is provided by
  • NHS 85m 20
  • Voluntary giving 235m 56
  • Volunteers value 100m 24
  • 80 of the income comes from volunteers
  • 80 of the outlay is the cost of employing the
    15,000 staff

6
Independent Hospices Volunteers
  • There are 90,000 of them, working usually ½ a
day per week, equivalent to 9,000 full time
staff. They could cost some 100m.
  • 87 are over 50 - 13 are over 70
  • Volunteers are mainly third agers

7
Third Agers
  • The three ages
  • 1st age - education and
  • 2nd age - main career and launching the family
  • 3rd age - the age of living
  • Third Agers are increasing in number
  • We are younger and fitter
  • Many want to go on giving

8
The 90,000 Volunteers help
  • With care of patients and carers
  • by driving
  • as receptionists
  • as therapists
  • with gardening
  • with book keeping
  • as Trustees

9
Volunteers help with Fundraising
  • Hospice Shops
  • Hospice Lottery
  • Support Groups
  • Special Events
  • Spreading the Word

10
Regular Cash Income
  • NHS 29 (reducing)
  • Legacies 23
  • Other public giving 31 (incl sponsorship)
  • Trading 20
  • Other 7
  • PATIENTS PAY NOTHING

11
Independent Hospice Income
  • A total of 320pa
  • Collectively far larger than that of any other
    fundraising charity
  • Costs only 7 of income to collect - others often
quote figures of 30 and above.

12
Volunteers help because
  • They want to
  • They know the service is very good
  • The hospice is locally owned and helps local
    people
  • They can see and feel the help they give
  • There is no bureaucracy
  • they themselves gain satisfaction and dignity

13
Third Age Volunteers bring
  • Real and ordinary life into the hospice
  • wisdom and maturity
  • experience of life
  • a refreshing balance amongst the professional
    care
  • benefit not burden

14
Lessons
  • The third agers can and do bring benefits to the
    sick and old
  • They themselves gain benefit
  • The organisation has to adapt to use them
  • More government encouragement would help - but
    words are not enough
  • There is a lot more help that could be given by
this growing number of third agers.
