Title: Revision Session 1

1
Revision Session 1
  • Social Reasons for Participation
  • School
  • Social Background

2
Before we start Revision Tip 1
I always try to run home so that I can do more
revision each evening!
3
Social Reasons For Participation
  • More people are involved in physical activity
    than ever before
  • Why is this the case??????

4
Increased Leisure Time
  • Shorter Working Week- Many jobs now have a
shorter working week. This may give people extra
time to participate in physical activity

5
Increased Leisure Time
  • Technological Advances
  • Many jobs take much less time due to technology.
  • Computers can save a lot of time and even allow
people to work from home, avoiding travelling
time. This allows extra time for leisure.
  • Machinery makes many jobs easier and quicker i.e.
machinery on building sites means that there is
    less labouring to do.
  • Many jobs are less physical now that machinery
does a lot of the work This means that workers
are not so tired and more likely to want to do
something active in their leisure time
  • Technological advances in medicine mean that
people are living longer and so have more
    retirement time for leisure activities
  • Advances in media technology means that there is
greater coverage of sport and physical activity
This often leads to greater participation

6
Increased Leisure Time
  • Early Retirement
  • Many more people are retiring earlier when they
still able to be physically active in their
    leisure time
  • Without the commitments of work they have a great
    deal of leisure time
  • These people often have enough money to afford to
do the activities they are interested in

7
Increased Leisure Time
  • Unemployment
  • Many people lose or leave their jobs
  • Without the commitments of work they have a
    greater amount of leisure time
  • However these people may not have much money if
they are not earning a wage and so they have
    fewer options.

8
Why do people participate?
  • You need to know the 3 main reasons
  • Health
  • Leisure
  • Vocation

9
Health
  • People are more aware that regular exercise is
good for their physical and mental health.
  • Body image is important for many people
  • There are many more gyms and sports clubs
    available

10
Leisure and enjoyment
  • People participate in sport and physical activity
    simply because they enjoy it
  • Benefits include
  • Friendship
  • Personal satisfaction
  • Relaxation/stress relief
  • People can involve themselves in active hobbies.

11
Vocation
  • For many people their job is sport related.
  • There are professional sportsmen/women who are
    full time
  • There are semi-professionals who have other jobs
    as well
  • There are many jobs related to sport other than
playing sport- i.e. management of teams or sports
clubs/gyms, and medical support for players.

Revision Tip 3
If you dont organise your revision you could
feel this bad after your exams
Remember - Revision is not just for geeks! Its
for cool people like us too!
22
Social Background
  • The following areas are ones that you must
    consider when discussing influences on
    participation
  • Access
  • Age
  • Disability
  • Education
  • Environment
  • Family
  • Gender
  • Media
  • Peer Groups
  • Politics
  • Poverty
  • Religion
  • Sponsorship
  • Tradition/culture

Print out this and the following 4 slides which
give a brief summary of these points. Make sure
you read up on these in your textbook.
23
  • Access to facilities can people get there, are
facilities available and are they affordable?
  • Age Some sports are considered Old or Young
peoples sports which may put some people off
taking part. More older people are getting
    involved in sport now.
  • Disability There is now much more available for
disabled people, with clubs set up for them,
facilities accessible to them and more role
    models in the media.
  • Education Students encouraged to participate at
school (as we have just discussed) and even after
they leave school. Adult Education encourages
participation. However, many playing fields have
been sold off in the past reducing opportunity to
participate, and teachers have so many
    administrative responsibilities they have less
    time for extra-curricular activities.

24
  • Environment The physical environment and
climate have an effect on the sports that people
play. ie if you live near the coast there are
more opportunities for surfing, sailing etc, and
if you live near mountains there might be more
opportunities for skiing, mountain walking etc.
Also a good climate encourages more outdoor
    sport.
  • Family Parental support can be vital in
    participation, by encouraging participation in
sports they enjoy themselves, by providing
finance and transport etc. If parents dont
provide this support then it is difficult for
their son/daughter to carry on participating.
  • Gender Often sports are associated with
particular genders and so some people would not
want to get involved. However there are some
areas where this is changing i.e. womens
football and rugby are both growing very quickly.
More boys may be involved in dance
  • The Media With greater media coverage of sport
there are more role models and greater interest
in sports which may encourage participation

25
  • Peer Groups People often will participate in
the sports that their friends are involved in. It
is often difficult to get involved with
activities that your friends dont like.
  • Politics Governments who see the benefits of
the population being involved in sport can
encourage this by giving more funding to schools,
clubs and associations to provide more facilities
    and opportunities
  • Poverty Many people cannot afford to do
expensive sports and so rarely do people from
poorer backgrounds succeed in these sports. The
cheaper sports are often popular with people from
poorer backgrounds and sometimes this allows
people to succeed professionally and break away
from their poorer roots. Many funding
initiatives (ie The Active Communities Programme)
are aimed at encouraging participation in
    deprived areas.
  • Sponsorship Companies and the government can
provide financial support and equipment for
sports leagues, clubs and players in return for
positive advertising . This allows these people
to participate in activities without having to
find the money to cover their expenses.

26
  • Tradition and Culture This can affect
participation in positive and negative ways. In
some cultures for example women are not allowed
to expose their arms and legs so wearing sports
kit is discouraged and therefore sporting
    opportunities are reduced.
  • Often different cultures concentrate on specific
activities. For example there are more Asians who
play top level Cricket compared to those who play
    football
