- Lounge
- Restaurant
- Nightclub
2Holiday Inn Astoria
- For my Coop term I decided to stay at the Hotel
that I have worked at for the past 3 years.
Before my Coop term I had worked in the
restaurant, lounge, and nightclub. When I talked
to Mr. Thornton about staying, he told me it
would be better to learn something new, so I
decided to take on a new challenge, which was
Front Desk. So in May I started training at the
Front Desk, and I was also working in the other
departments as well.

5Front Desk
- After being trained at Front Desk, I learned that
even though I knew what I was supposed to know at
the Front Desk I was still getting asked many
other question, that sometimes I couldnt answer.
For example - How do you get to the Keg downtown
- Where is the Rugby park
- What is the best place for pizza, steak, coffee,
wings, etc. in Winnipeg. And how do you get
there? - How far is it to get here, or there?
- How do I use this calling card?
- Can you fix the ATM, overflowing toilet, leaking
Air conditioner, computer/printer, phone, etc. - And I would also get other weird questions or
requests
6Front Desk
- You need to
- Know the Opera system
- Have good communication skills
- Know everything about the hotel (you are their
information system) - Knowledge of the city
7- The lid is connected to the back of the hotel. I
was asked to work here after I had worked up
front in the restaurant for about a year. When I
first started in the nightclub I was assigned to
do coat check. Now I do coat check, cover charge,
beer tub, and I waitress as well.
8The Lid Nightclub
- Coat Check Hanging up coats sounds simple, but
I consider it to be one of the hardest jobs
there! - Waitress
- Beer tub
- Cover Charge
9Park Avenue Restaurant
- This is where it all started. I got a full-time
job working in the restaurant at the hotel. - The hours were either 645 a.m. to 2 p.m. or
430 p.m. to 9 p.m. - I was by myself most of the time, so I had to
know what I was doing.
10The Astoria Lounge Duties include
- Validating tickets
- Cashing tickets for customers
- Serving alcoholic beverages
- Serving Food/drink
- Taking care of machines. Putting in Paper,
emptying out money, Calling in problems.
11Banquets/Special Events
- For the past three years I have done banquets at
the Holiday Inn. Here are some of the things I
have done - Wedding receptions
- Funeral receptions
- Dinner Parties
- Business meetings
- Birthdays
- Anniversaries
- Christmas brunch/Dinner
- New Years Eve Dinner
- Reunions
- Retirements
- Mothers Day/Fathers Day Brunch
- I Usually serve, or bartend for these special
occasions. I usually am the one to set up all the
tables also.
12Professional Personal Gains
- Working at this hotel has given me the chance to
make many friends and meet new people everyday.
Over a year ago I decided that taking this
management course was a great Idea, and would
help me achieve a lot. - I have learned many things since I began working
here. Some examples are - Ive learned to be patient and listen.
- My schedule can be really hectic, so Ive learned
to take life just one day at a time. - Ive become more mature. I live on my own, I need
to pay my own bills/rent. - For my Coop, I decided to learn Front Desk. Ive
learned to speak, and act more professional. My
phone etiquette needed a bit of work. Ive
learned how to better deal with people who are
angry and frustrated. - Ive gained the trust respect of my managers,
and co-workers. - Ive gained more confidence in myself overall, I
used to be really shy, and the Hospitality
Industry has helped my come out of my shell.

27A typical week
This is a typical week at work. I would most
likely get a day off, but this will just give you
an idea of what hours I work.
