Need for grid computing

• Complex, data-intensive research and business
  analysis require ultra-high compute capability
• Needs to fully optimize valuable computing
  resources
• Allow many inexpensive heterogeneous systems to
  be combined dynamically into one virtual
  computing platform
• Unlike clusters, grid computing allows
  geographically separate systems to be harnessed
  as one coordinated system
• Desire to connect computers using standard
  networking instead of local computer buses
• Network speeds and storage improvements far
  outpace processor speed improvements
