An Overview of MRSA
  • Presented by the Taney County Health Department

3
What Is MRSA?
  • M ethicillin
  • R esistant
  • S taphylococcus
  • A ureus

4
What Is Staph?
  • Staph is a bacteria commonly carried on the skin
or in the nose of healthy people
  • It is the most common cause of skin infections in
    the united states
  • Most of these skin infections (pimples and boils)
    can be treated without antibiotics
  • Staph may also cause serious infections (surgical
    wound infections,pneumonia)

5
Antibiotic Resistant Staph
  • Methicillin resistant Staph aureus is a type of
staph that is resistant to a family of
antibiotics commonly used to treat staph
    infections
  • These antibiotics include methicillin, oxacillin,
    nafcillin, penicillin, and amoxicillin
  • MRSA affects about 1 of the population

6
Where Does MRSA Occur?
  • Most often occurs among persons in hospitals and
healthcare facilities (nursing homes and dialysis
centers) who have weakened immune systems
  • MRSA can also cause illness in persons outside of
    hospitals and healthcare facilities
  • This is known as community-associated MRSA or
    CA-MRSA

7
How Does CA-MRSA Occur?
  • Usually begins with an injury to the skin such as
a cut or scrape which allows the bacteria to
enter the skin and cause an infection
  • Some of the symptoms include Redness, warmth,
swelling, tenderness of the skin, and boils or
    blisters
  • May be mistaken as a spider bite

8
Some Things That Make It Easier for staph to Be
Transmitted
  • Remember the 5cs
  • C rowding
  • C ontact (frequent skin to skin contact)
  • C ompromised skin (i.e. Cuts or abrasions)
  • C ontaminated items and surfaces (towels,
    exercise equipment)
  • C leanliness lack thereof

9
The Most Common Location for the 5cs Include
  • Schools
  • Dormitories
  • Military barracks
  • Households
  • Correctional facilities
  • Child care centers

10
What can I do to protect myself?
  • Wash your hands with soap and water or use an
    alcohol-based hand sanitizer
  • Shower after working out
  • Keep cuts and scrapes clean and covered with a
    bandage until healed
  • Avoid contact with other peoples wounds or
    bandages

11
Protect Yourself cont
  • Avoid sharing personal items such as towels or
    razors
  • Use a barrier(e.g.Clothing or a towel) between
your skin and shared equipment(e.g. Exercise
equipment in a gym), and wipe the surfaces of the
    equipment before and after use.

12
What Should I Do If I Think I May Have MRSA?
  • See your health care provider
  • Most staph infections, including those caused by
    MRSA, are treatable with antibiotics
  • If prescribed an antibiotic, take all of the
doses, even if the infection is getting better,
unless your doctor tells you to stop taking it

13
What to Do If You Have MRSA
  • Do not share antibiotics with other people or
save unfinished antibiotics to use another time
  • Many staph infections may be treated by draining
the abscess or boil and may not require
    antibiotics
  • If the infection does not get better within a few
days after visiting your healthcare provider,
    contact them again

14
What to Do If You Have MRSA
  • Cover your wound with clean, dry bandages until
    healed
  • Follow your healthcare providers instructions on
proper wound care. Keeping the infection covered
will help prevent the spread to others
  • Bandages and tape can be disposed of in the the
    regular trash
