  • December 1991 -- In Bosnia, the most ethnically
    mixed Yugoslav republic, Serb minority holds
    unofficial referendum opposing separation from
    Yugoslavia. Local Serb leaders proclaim new

    fighting subsides.

    siege of capital Sarajevo.
