The Danish Flag

• According to the Danish legend, Dannebrog fell
  down from the sky on June 15, 1219,and landed by
  the Danish King Valdamar II during his war
  against Estonia. If the legend is true then
  Dannebrog is the oldest flag still in use. The
  word Dannebrog means the cloth of the Danes. The
  flag became a symbol for armies or military
  marines. In 1854, private persons had access to
  the flag. The most famous flag is a rectangular
  form with red background and a white cross. The
  Danes were very proud of their flag and used it
  whenever it was possible. The Danish families use
  the flag when they celebrate birthdays, weddings
  and other important feasts.

• The Danes have been singing this song since 1844.
  Adam Oehlenschläger made the text and Hans Ernst
  Krøyer composed the melody.
