VPN (Virtual Private Network)

• What is a VPN?
• Who needs to use it?
• What type of VPN do we use?

What is a VPN?

• Usually refers to a network in which some of the
  parts are connected using the public Internet,
  but the data sent across the Internet is
  encrypted, so the entire network is "virtually"
  private. A typical example would be a company
  network where there are two offices in different
  cities. Using the Internet the two offices merge
  their networks into one network, but encrypt
  traffic that uses the Internet link.

UI VPN?

• Secure encrypted connection to the UI network.
• User Authentication Required. (LDAP)
• A UI IP address (129.101.x.x)

Who uses the VPN?

• Anyone not connected to the UI network will need
  to use the VPN client to access Banner after
  October 16th, 2006.
• Anyone using a wireless connection on campus will
  need to use the UI VPN to access Banner.
• Public ports across campus also currently require
  the VPN to access Banner.

What type of VPN do we use?

• CISCO 3030 VPN Concentrator
• Hardware based.
• 50Mb bandwidth available.

Client Software

• Cisco VPN Client Software 4.8
• Only supported in Windows XP
• Available for download at support.uidaho.edu

How to connect to the VPN

• Demo time.
• Should not be used for normal traffic.
• Will disconnect current active connections.
• Open connection (unrestricted)

VPN Troubleshooting

• Does the user have an account?
• DO NOT add users to the VandalVPN group though
  UAM. Only Secondary should add users to the
  group.

VPN Troubleshooting

• How are users connecting to the internet?
• Some NAT devices may not allow VPN connections or
  limit connections to one machine at a time.
• Be sure to document the type of NAT device in the
  ticket.

• Users authenticate though LDAP. Look for
  password issues though UAM.
• Expired
• Locked
• Changed Password Recently

• Document Thoroughly
• The VPN has not been widely used on campus so we
  may encounter new issues.

• Client is only supported in XP.
• Most users will be connecting from home machines.
  Be certain that they are using Windows XP.

VPN Troubleshooting

• Slower performance when using VPN.
• Sharing 50Mb with all VPN users.
• Client machine has to encrypt all data being sent
  from the machine and decrypt all data being
  received.

VPN Troubleshooting

• All TSRs should have VPN accounts. Make sure
  your comfortable using the VPN.
• Try it out.
