2Important conditions!
- Each successful student must submit a bound paper
copy and two electronic copies of the approved
dissertation/thesis to the Head Student
Administration of his/her faculty - Format of the two electronic copies
- 1 PDF copy which you should produce yourself
using free Cute PDF software available from
http//www.cutepdf.com/ (click on Free Download) - 1 Word copy
- File sizes
- Your files should be smaller than 5 MB after
conversion - If the entire etd is bigger than 6 MB split
according to the guidelines available on the
UPeTD web http//upetd.up.ac.za/authors/publish/s
tandards.htm - File names
- Name the files according to the file naming
conventions at http//upetd.up.ac.za/authors/publi
sh/standards.htm - Security settings
- DO not add any security settings this will be
done by the UPeTD office - Please do NOT contact the Library staff for
assistance, but you are welcome to contact Mrs.
Alet Grobler at 012 667 3765 who will process the
etd according to the standards at a minimal fee
3Cute PDF can be downloaded for free from the
Internet
4Start Microsoft Word to open your thesis or
dissertation
5Open your MS Word file as stored on your memory
disk
6Open your dissertation/thesis (MS Word file)
7An example of a thesis or dissertation
originated in MS Word format
8Choose print from the File menu
9The print dialog box will open. Choose CutePDF
Writer from the pop-up menu under Printer
10You will be prompted to save the file
11Choose the drive where you want to save the
file, e.g. Removable disk
12When prompted, type a filename. Remember
the file naming conventions on the UPeTD website

13You will be able to follow the conversion at the
bottom of the screen
14Close your document after the conversion has been
completed
15Both the MS Word and PDF files will be displayed
16Open the PDF document
17Check all graphics, tables and figures for
correctness
