Title: Differentiating Instruction
1Differentiating Instruction
2- How smart is this student?
-
- How is the student smart?
3Definitions of Differentiating Instruction by
Product
- A product is a means by which students
demonstrate what they know, understand, and are
able to do in relation to the lesson. - The term product also refers to a culminating
product, or something students produce that
demonstrates major portions of learning
following a unit lesson.
4You can use a product to differentiate
instruction by adding greater complexity or
abstractness to tasks, by engaging students in
critical and creative thinking, or by increasing
the variety of ways in which you ask them to
demonstrate what they have learned.
5Product can be differentiated by
- Readiness
- a students entry point relative to a particular
understanding or skill - Interest
- a students affinity, curiosity, or passion for
a particular topic or skill - Learning Profile
- has to do with how a student learns and may
- be shaped by intelligence preferences, gender,
culture, or learning styles
6Strategies for Differentiating Product
- Use tiered product assignments.
- Use tiered activities
- (activities at different levels of difficulty,
but focused on the same key learning goals). - An example of a 6th grade math lesson working on
fractions would include - Tier one
- The student will match the fraction piece to the
fraction. - Tier Two
- The student will complete a pictorial
representation of a variety of fractions. - Tier Three
- The student will design a PowerPoint presentation
displaying how to add fractions.
7Now its your turn.
- Take fifteen minutes at your
- table and work in small
- groups to develop a
- three tiered lesson based
- on a specific content area.
- Report out by table.
8Strategies forDifferentiating Product
- Use similar-readiness groups or teacher led
groups to discuss product development (from
advanced students to students who need extra
support and guidance). - Provide teacher-led mini-workshops on varied
skills at varied levels of complexity to support
student work and finished products.
9Strategies for Differentiating Product
- Develop rubrics or other benchmarks for success
based on both grade-level expectations and
individual student learning needs. - Provide resource materials at
- varied levels of readability and sophistication.

13Strategies for Differentiating Product
- Encourage students to demonstrate key knowledge,
understanding, and skills in related topics of
special interest. - Help students find mentors to guide product
development or choice of products.
14Strategies for Differentiating Product
- Allow students to use a range of media or formats
to express their knowledge, understanding, and
skill. - Design tasks that require multiple interests for
successful completion. - Encourage students to design or participate in
the design of some tasks.
15Strategies for Differentiating Product
- Encourage students to work together or
independently - on product development.
- Teach students how to use a wide range of product
formats. - Provide visual, auditory, and kinesthetic product
options.

18Strategies for Differentiating Product
- Provide analytic, creative, and practical product
options. - Ensure connections between product assignments
and a range of student cultures/communities.
19Upon implementation of these strategies a student
will be able to understand and own the knowledge
and skills essential to find success in a content
area.

21- Creating a Successful Differentiated Product
- 1. Identify the key elements of the lesson
- What students must
- know (facts)
- understand (concepts, generalizations)
- be able to do (skills)
- as result of the lesson.
- Identify one or more formats of the product
- required (e.g., poetry, an experiment,
- graphing, charting, computer presentation)
- student choices based on their talent,
passion - or interest
223. Determine criteria for quality in
content (information, ideas, concepts,
materials) process (planning,
goal-setting, effective use of
time,originality, insight, research,
editing) product (size, construction,
durability, expert-level,
expectations, parts)
23- 4. Decide on scaffolding you may need to
- build on in order to promote success
- brainstorming for ideas
- developing rubrics/criteria for success
- timelines
- planning/goal setting
- storyboarding
- critiquing
- revising/editing
24- Develop a product assignment that clearly states
to the student - How knowledge of a concept is to be
- expressed
- Proceeding through these steps/stages
- -In this form
- -At this level of quality
25- 6. Differentiate or modify versions of the
assignment based on - student readiness
- student interest
- student learning profile
- 7. Provide support and guidance to promote
student success.

27- Imagine a world of diversity and interdependence
where people are respected simply for who they
are where commonalities are recognized and
differences are celebrated for what they truly
are opportunities to bring something unique and
individual to our community. - Dan Wilkins
