White Balance (WB)

• Also called Color Balance or Color Temperature.
  This is the camera's ability to be set to record
  accurate color under different lighting
  conditions.

  kinds of white balance.

• Most digital cameras have several different white
  balance options.
• Auto White Balance (AWB)
• Direct Sunlight
• Outdoor Shade
• Outdoor Overcast
• Indoor light-bulb or Tungsten
• Indoor Fluorescent
• Manual WB

Auto White Balance (AWB)

• In this mode setting the camera takes its best
  guess about the color balance of the lighting.
  Many modern cameras do a good job of guessing the
  proper color balance. This is the best overall WB
  setting if you don't know or don't have the time
  to set the actual WB. However AWB changes every
  time you take a picture so it can change from one
  picture to the next.

Direct Sunlight WB

• A WB preset that is made for pictures taken in
  direct sunlight.

Outdoor Shade WB

• A WB preset that is made for pictures taken
  outdoors but in the shadow out of sunlight. Light
  it outdoor shadows tends to be more bluish in
  color as more of the light comes from the blue
  sky.

Overcast WB

• A WB preset that is made for pictures taken
  outdoors but in overcast cloud cover. This
  setting is similar in color balance to Outdoor
  Shade WB.

Indoor Tungsten WB

• This WB preset that is made for pictures taken
  indoors with light-bulb, also called
  incandescent, or tungsten lights. This color of
  lighting is more yellow-orange than sunlight.

Indoor Fluorescent WB

• Fluorescent is the least consistent type of
  lighting. Fluorescent lights can range from
  greenish to almost daylight balance. When in
  doubt, AWB might be a better choice.

Manual WB

• Some cameras allow the setting of a manual, or
  sometimes called Custom WB. This usually
  involves pointing the camera at a white surface
  and either locking the setting or actually taking
  a picture to use as a reference. You must set
  manual white balance in the same lighting the
  pictures are taken. A white or neutral gray (such
  as a photographic gray card) must be used.

Raw File Format

• In most cameras the Raw file format option
  ignores the WB setting. The Raw setting preforms
  minimal image processing in the camera. Raw image
  files are usually processed later by Raw decoding
  software or image editing programs.
