Resolution and size
9
Resolution
  • Digital images are made up of dots (blocks)
    called pixels (picture elements)
  • Low resolution means fewer dots per inch
    (dpidots per inch)
  • Higher resolution means more dpi

Low resolution
High resolution
10
Resolution
  • You need to consider resolution from the start
of the process. What is your destination?
  • Printing?
  • On-screen presentation?
  • Web?

11
Resolution
  • For On-screen viewing (web graphics or PowerPoint
    presentations) use
  • 72 dpi

12
Resolution
  • For printing (photographs, pre-press or
photocopies) use the highest resolution your
    printer supports,
  • typically
  • 300 dpi
  • or better

13
Resolution
  • Resolution dictates file size. Greater resolution
larger files. A 4x3 image optimized for
screen (72dpi) print (300 dpi) would yield file
    sizes of
  • screen_72_dpi.bmp 183 kb
  • print_300_dpi.bmp 3,165 kb
  • You can always reduce resolution. You can never
truly increase it. If space allows, err on the
    side of greater resolution.

14
File Formatsdifferent contents, different
extensions
  • .jpg - jay-peg
  • .gif - jiff
  • .bmp - bitmap or bump
  • .tif - tiff

  • Quality degrades with multiple saves, and you
    cant un-smudge
  • Best when content is photographic
  • Good on web

16
.gif - Graphics Interchange Format
  • Best for line-art, charts, graphs
  • Crayon rule, one-hand rule
  • Good for logos
  • Clip art-type illustrations
  • Poor for photographs
  • Good on web

17
.bmp - Windows Bitmap
  • Windows native format
  • Good for Windows wallpaper
  • Very large file sizes
  • Adjustable color depth
  • Wont work on web

18
.tif - Tagged Image File Format
  • Often used for professional publishing
    applications.
