The voice of members
  • ICE member satisfaction survey April 2003
  • Members want ICE to promote civil engineering
    and influence politicians and decision makers
  • To raise the profile of the Civil Engineer was
    one of the top priorities for ICE members
  • ICE should do more to raise the importance of
    Civil Engineering to society

Communications
  • Following the advice of members, ICE has invested
    heavily in its Marketing and Communications
    Division
  • Pro-active media department sells civil
    engineering stories to national media and press
  • ICE gives authoritative views and advice on
    issues related to UKs infrastructure

State of the Nation
  • Main tool in gaining media coverage and
    attracting Parliamentary interest
  • Looks at and assesses the state of UK
    infrastructure
  • Yearly launch in the Houses of Parliament in
    London in 2003, nine government ministers and 40
    MPs attended the launch
  • Attracted coverage in BBC and major newspapers
  • In 2004, five supplementary regional versions

Agenda for change
  • Statement of ICEs position on key issues, e.g.
    transport, energy, environment.
  • Launched in relation to national, regional or
    local elections
  • First produced in 2001 for the general elections
  • Local versions made for elections in Wales,
    Scotland and Northern Ireland in 2003
  • In 2004, a London version for the local elections

Dealings with Parliament
  • ICE gave evidence to three Parliamentary Select
    Committees in the last six months on
  • Energy and the Nation Grid
  • Water and Climate Change
  • International Development Policy

Dealings with Parliament and Government
  • ICE has submitted written evidence to over ten
    inquiries by Parliamentary Select Committees in
    the last 12 months
  • Private briefings, dinners etc. with key civil
    servants and parliamentarians on topical issues
  • Attendance and events at the political party
    conferences each autumn

Dealing with media
  • ICE is frequently referred to in the press in
    relation to topical issues such as flooding,
    energy crisis, transport problems etc.
  • ICE members are frequently being used by media as
    experts
  • The Communications Team targets press and media
    with topical stories and press releases

Conclusion
  • The last year, ICE has been able to make the
    civil engineering profession more visible in the
    UK
  • ICE has the advantage of being an independent,
    non-political organisation giving an
    authoritative voice on major political issues
  • ICEs main resource the members and their
    voluntary contribution
