1Teaching With Video Tutorials
- Using Screen Recording Software to Improve
Student Achievement - Kevin Schmitz Library Media Specialist
- Darren Hartberg 8th Grade Health Educator
2What is Screen Recording Software?
- Captures a "movie" of what you do on your
computer - Records what you click on and when
- Records your voice as you talk through tasks
- Software, web pages, anything on your screen
- Also called Screencasting
3Screen Recording Software
- Camtasia (TechSmith)
- CamStudio (Open Source)
- Captivate (Adobe)
- Jing (TechSmith)
- Snapz Pro (Ambrosia) for Macs
- SMART software

5How Can Screen Recording Help You as a LMS?
- Allows you to bring something new to the table
that teachers may not know about or be able to
use - Can get you into the classroom or lab
- As an LMS, you can reuse them in different
classesor from year to year - It lessens the amount of one-on-one re-teaching
you need to do like cloning yourself
6Advantages to Video Tutorials
- Videos offer the learner another way to
supplement their understanding - Its like packaging up your teaching
- Very effective ALONG WITH other teaching methods
(written directions, etc.) - Students are more focused
7Advantages to Video Tutorials
- Students can work at their own pace
- Students can repeat a section or pause as needed
- Available 24/7 online from anywhere
- Students dont miss instruction if absent (this
is huge!)
8Advantages to Video Tutorials
- Visual learners prefer them to written
instructions they want to see it - Instruction is the same every time
- Helps them be more independent learners
- As students get spread out on a projectits
OK!
9Challenges
- Takes time to create the videos up front
- Learning curve to using the software
- Infrastructure must support it
- If something changes (website or software), the
video must be edited or totally redone
10Tips for Better Videos
- Keep them short! (short attention spans)
- My Destiny Tutorial was 14 minutes longdont do
this! - Better to do several short ones than one long one
- Try to stay under 3 minutesor less
- I cut out any dead space and try to keep things
moving along quickly
11More Tips
- Dont zoom around the screen too much
- Use lots of callouts arrows with words that
visually reinforces what youre saying - Have good headphones available for students
- Use the flash format and have clickable menus on
the side - Make sure the resolution fits your schools
monitor display
128th Grade Health ProjectDietary Analysis Report
- Existing project that Darren was doing alreadya
big 3 ½ week research project! - This project is cross-curricular science,
English, Math, Library Media Research Skills - I brought in video based instruction to
supplement his written and verbal directions
138th Grade Health ProjectDietary Analysis Report
- Goal lessen the burden on Darren to re-teach
the how-tos of the MyPyramid website.more time
to help with higher level questioning and
critical thinking skills - MyPyramid website requires multiple steps and
directions for students www.mypyramidtracker.gov - Videos started with registration, entering food
exercise - Videos then assisted in data analysis of food
entered for students nutritional project goals
14The Dietary Analysis Report
- Students created a five paragraph essay outlining
their three goals for lifelong eating habits - Students used data collected from daily food and
exercise logs - They analyzed data from MyPyramid Tracker
- Researched other websites
- Made a bibliography using EasyBib (video
tutorials for these as well)
15How Students BenefitedFrom the Video Tutorials
- Some students preferred the videos to written and
verbal directions from teacher - Absent students caught up quickly
- Students worked from home or outside of class
- Differentiation for multiple intelligences
- Students felt more empowered worked at their
own pace, chose resources that worked best for
them not defined by teacher - 40 Developmental Assets
- 21st Century Skills
16Student Survey Data
- About 50 of the students reported that they used
the videos - The rest reported that they either used written
directions or figured it out themselves - Almost all students used Video Tutorials in other
classes - This time it was a choice
17Student Comments What They Liked About Using
Videos
- Showed me what to do step by step
- If I didnt get it, I can rewind and watch
again - Good for visual learners
- Explains what to do in the easiest way possible
- Work at your own speed
- They get the point across exactly
18Student Comments What They Liked About Using
Videos
- They gave us good tips on what to do
- They are better than a teacher explaining
because they show you step by step and I really
like that! - They are specific and help me find exactly what
Im looking for - They show you the computer screen so you see
what it should look like
19Student Comments How to Improve the Videos
- Make them shorter!
- Turn down the music a little bit
- Go faster
- Slow them down so we can take notes without
being rushed - They are good for some kids that need them but I
really didnt need them - Put in more details
