3The Importance of IT Industry in Korea
- Since the mid 1990s, Korea has became a major
leader in IT, drawing attention from around the
world as a model country for others to benchmark
themselves against - Korea ranked first in the number of broadband
Internet users - 5th in the number of Internet users
- 7th in Internet connection fees and
- 9th in mobile phone tariffs.
- The IMD World Competitiveness Yearbook for 2004
- Korea was selected as the country with the
largest IT share in exports among OECD members as
its IT exports accounted for 30 or 57.6 billion
of the total 193.8 billion outbound shipment in
2003 - However, todays success does not necessarily
lead to tomorrows prosperities
4Innovation Convergence
- Innovation is carrying out new combinations
- Joseph Alois Schumpeter
- Innovation does not result from the creation of
new goods or services, but from new combinations
of the existing inventions - Therefore, the second phase of IT revolution will
take the form of combinations or convergence - The primary engine of the IT revolution in the
future will be the convergent industry of
information, communications and broadcasting
based on the broadband network - Currently, with the creation of new products and
markets such as telematics (IT and automobiles),
home network (IT, construction and consumer
electronics), and e-finance (IT and finance), new
opportunities are being unfolded before us - Korean Government is driving the transformation
of IT industry from a single service (or
product-oriented one) into a converged one (or
integrated service or product structure).
5Computing Communication Convergence
- The present immense notice for convergence really
began with the popularization of internet because
World Wide Web enabled the creation of services
integrating computing, communications and data - More recently, Grid computing began to gather the
interest of researchers as the enabler of full
convergence for all kinds of resources including
computing and networking devices

6What Is Grid Computing?
- The definition of Grid is scattered until now,
but it will converge to the achievement of the
orchestrated scalable entity for heterogeneous
networked resources - The present recognition for the concept of Grid
includes utility computing, on-demand computing,
internet computing, network computing, enterprise
resource integration, global load balancing, and
so on. - Grid computing mainly means
- to reduce total cost of ownership(TCO)
- to aggregate and improve efficiency of computing,
data, and storage resource - to enable the creation of virtual organizations
for applications and data sharing

8The importance of Grid in Korea
- The importance of Grid in Korea is larger than
other countries possessing strong
telecommunication industry - In case of Korea, computing industry is
relatively weaker than telecommunication industry - Grid can be the stepping stone for strengthening
Korean computing industry based on current IT
capability of Korea through computing and
communication convergence services

9Telcos Grid
- The expansion of Grid-enabled applications will
take the key role in pulling the adoption of
options for advanced services, including QoS and
security, to the broadband subscribers - The enlargement of Grid adoption will increase
the demand for fast Ethernet connectivity and
flexible QoS management of telecommunication - The virtualization of different owners resources
will require advanced security guarantee of
network services - The popularization of Grid services will
accelerate the competition of computing industry
and telecommunication industry - The relative importance of value-adding
applications and system integration increases in
comparison with the physical infrastructure
itself such as CPU, storage, network - The convergence of computing and communication
can be seen as both threat and opportunity to
telcos - Proper management of convergence can generate the
new source of profit by Grid services to Telcos
10Business Grid
- Definition
- Business activities through commercialized IT
services based on Grid technologies - Scattered areas of Business Grid
- Industries that are currently using Grid
Technology are Life Science, Engineering,
Commerce, Financial, Electronic Design
Automation, Digital content creation, Testing,
Server/Storage, Batch processing, Decision
support/data mining and so on

12IT839 Grid (1)
- IT839
- 8 stands for 8 essential new services, 3
represents 3 major infrastructures, and 9 stands
for 9 new growth engines - The IT839 strategy aims to realize a ubiquitous
world by forming the mutually developing
structure among the introduction of new services,
construction of infrastructures, and the new
growth engine sectors -

13IT839 Grid (2)
- For all the services of IT839 strategy, computing
technologies integrating systems take the core
parts of service value, but Korean computing
industry is not developed enough compared to
electronics and telecommunication industries - The recently announced possible change of IT839,
including software infrastructure, means that MIC
decided to compensate current weakness of Korean
IT industry by promoting the software capability
which can support electronics and
telecommunication business - Grid business has the potential as the outpost of
Korean IT industry toward global computing
business - Korean major telcos such as SKT and KT, are
changing to service business companies on the
basis of their core competency as the network
operators - Their services are evolving into fully converged
form, and requiring the intelligent and real-time
coordination of massive networked IT resources. - The importance of Grid technology increases as
Korean telcos evolution toward service business
firms proceeds
14Korean Grid Activities
- Establishment of basic national Grid project plan
for next generation internet (2001.5) - Beginning of Grid Forum Korea (2001.10)
- Currently, 25 working groups and 256
participating organizations are active - Inclusion of Grid in e-Korea Vision 2006 (MIC,
2002.12) - Approval of APEC for the nation of whole
responsibility in APGrid project - APECTel 24 (2002.10)
- Promotion of eScience project and large-size
construction technology infrastructure project
connecting with national Grid project - Cooperative execution of national Grid project
with 8 countries, including U.S, Japan and U.K
15GECON
- International Workshop on Grid Economics
Business Models - Co-hosted and co-organized by KISTI and SNU
- 2004, 2005 in Seoul
- 2006 in Singapore
- World-wide researchers in academic and industrial
areas joined in past two events to share the
ideas about Grid business - Business Session

16Business Grid Symposium
- Korean Grid service companies will get together
to search the proper way of promoting Grid
business tomorrow - September 7th
- COEX ASEM Hall 203
- KISTI and our research group want to enlarge the
cooperating organizations globally - Our goal is to increase the possibility of
success in Korean Grid business - We need to overcome numerous hurdles, such as
attaining the global competitiveness in Grid
technology, developing the business model which
fits the Korean circumstances and so on - However, we expect that our activities will
extend the successful broadband penetration of
Korea to the popular Grid service provision
adoption, and drive the evolution of the Korean
IT industry
